Stranger things is a hit TV show created by the Duffer Brothers in 2016. The show follows a party of young pre-teenage boys playing Dungeons and Dragons in the 80s until one of the party members goes missing. It focuses on finding their absent party member and Hawkins's very mysterious and horrifying hidden secrets. LGBTQ+ representation was missing from the show till the third season. Robin was a new character introduced. At the end of the season, she comes out to her best friend Steve, as a lesbian. In the following season, she struggles with the confidence to ask out a girl she admires. Even though the show was made in 2016, it shows how little LGBTQ+ representation there was in the 80s.

Andi Mack is one of many shows released on Disney Channel. The show made history as the first Disney Channel show to have a character come out. One of the main characters Jonah comes out to his friends in his coming-of-age story. Even though his story isn’t the main plot it was a huge breakthrough for Disney. Most audiences seemed to accept this character, but many didn’t. It was sadly a very controversial topic but received praise from LGBTQ+ organizations. In Kenya, Andi Mack is banned from all audiences. Since then Disney Channel hasn’t had much LGBTQ+ representation in their recent shows.

Eternals shares the story of a group of sacred heroes that have protected Earth for thousands of years. The group disappeared for many years and had to reunite to save the earth once again. This film introduced Marvel's first openly gay superhero and first same-sex kiss. Phastos is introduced with his husband and son. This was a breakthrough for Marvel. This character seemed to be excepted by audiences however the film was not. The movie lacked and didn’t do well at the box office. Marvel is such a huge film company that is known for its exceptional superhero movies, I hope upcoming movies can bring more LGBTQ+ representation.

Bure has just stepped up to chief creative officer after stepping down from the Hallmark Channel previously. When asked if there would be same-sex couples in her Christmas movies she responded with “no”. She wants to keep traditional marriage as the main focus of her movies. This struck a lot of backlash at her for her comments. This allowed Hallmark to almost get back at Bure by premiering their first-holiday movie of the season centered around a same-sex couple. There will always be many Christmas movies centered around traditional marriages but very few centered around same-sex marriages. This is the lack of representation that needs to change in the film industry.

This means that no LGBTQ+ in media, on the internet, items sold to the general public, and more. This is an example of political homophobia. In 2013 a law was issued that banned LGBTQ+ discussions, media, and more from minors. Now they have taken away the rights of the LGBTQ+ community from Russia. If found “promoting” LGBTQ+ behavior or actions individuals could be fined or expelled from Russia. Lawmakers and Legislatures want to keep traditions from their grandparents and great-grandparents alive. This is a human right that Russia has taken away from folks of the LGBTQ+ community.
