'One Art' by Elizabeth Bishop describes a variety of losses, showing that loss happens in life and that sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn't. However, there is an increasing ironic undertone to her apparently lighthearted approach to loss, indicating to the reader that is can in fact be much harder to 'master' than she at first suggests.

How the idea that some loss can be handled is shown by the writer

The writer presents the idea that it is sometimes possible to handle loss in situations where the loss is measurable. For example, in combination with using the refrain 'The art of losing isn't hard to master' at least every other stanza, Bishop also mentions that you "lose something every day", such as "door keys", or time. The idea behind the listing of unmeaningful household objects being lost is to create the idea that loss isn't always such a problem and one can quite easily handle some losses. Moreover, the writer also describes the problem of losing small objects as a 'fluster'. The connotations with being flustered is quite light stress and it not being a total disaster, further showing the lack of painful loss in some circumstances.

The speaker coneveys loss as hard to accept however throughout the poem there is a lighthearted tone however towards the end of the poem there is an underlying sarcastic tone. For example the quote "The art of losing isn't hard to master " is repeated multiple times throughout the poem showing how there is a need for convincing in order to distance themselves from the loss. The word "art" has connotations of talent and technique this suggests that loss is something which requires experiance and effort to get over. Another way the writer portrays this idea of loss and difficulty to accept it is through the use of rhyme. For example, "Master" and "Disaster" are rhymed together multiple times showing a link between the two ideas and creating a cyclical structure. This suggests that

The poem shows how loss is part of life through Bishop’s repetition of a sarcastic tone. This is shown by “The art of losing is hard to master”, which is repeated several times through the poem. This repetition undoes the early emphasis on the idea. This in term creates a sacastic and joking tone which shows how loss is an important to being able to fully make the most of life as without loss you would be continually repeating the same time.

The poem shows how loss is part of life through Bishop’s use of a sarcastic tone.
