"In the area of economics, I allow myself to place before you, with the support of some figures,

the considerations which justify a policy of colonial expansion from the point of view of that

need, felt more and more strongly by the industrial populations of Europe and particularly those

of our own rich and hard working country: the need for export markets." Spoke by Jules Ferry before the French National Asembly. (From: http://people.umass.edu) Ferry was explaining why he believed France should take part in imperialism in Africa because he thinks France needs more exports.
Situation: The prime minister was explaining why France needs to venture out and colonize parts of Africa.
Audience: This speech was for those who worked against him to stop France from going into Africa and those who would help France receive the land they wanted.
Purpose: The purpose of Ferry's speech was to get people on board with French imperialism in Africa.

"In Africa, especially in tropical Africa, which a capitalistic imperialism threatens and has, in part, already devastated, man is incapable of reacting against unnatural conditions. In those regions man is engaged in a perpetual struggle against disease and an exhausting climate, which tells heavily upon childbearing; and there is no scientific machinery for salving the weaker members of the community." Wrote by Edward Morel, a journalist in the Belgian Congo. (From: Historywiz.com) Morel was against imperialism in Africa because he saw it as unfair. He told how the French brought over diseases and how imperialism brings more trouble to Africa than good. The only ones who are gaining anything is France.
Situation: This was Edward Morel's response to Rudyard Kipling's the White Man's Burden.
Audience: This writting was for those who were supporting imperialism in the Congo.
Purpose: Morel wanted to show that what the white man was doing wasn't making any sense and wasn't helping the way they said it was.

France should pursue imperialism because it allows us more power.
We can build more trading posts and that would bring in a lot more money so we can focus on further exploration and better our weapons.
France will gain more knowledge than other countries around, and we will be helping the Africans and Natives. They are uncivilized and need a push towards civilization, which is something we would be happy to do.
I chose this cartoon because it shows the French people trying to help civilize those in Africa.

This political cartoon was created in 1898. It shows how multiple different countries such as France, Russia, Great Britain, and Japan. The countries are splitting China up and not giving the emperor any say in how they do it. The author chose a pizza to show that it was easy for the countries to step in and take over the land. Also they drew some of the Great Powers looking angry because they were fighting over the land and made Japan look stumped because this was their first time actually receiving power. The author is against imperialism because of how they drew the China emperor in the back trying to make them stop. (From www.facinghistory.org)

France was involved with Africa by receiving slaves. Because of other countries expanding the need for slaves was also growing. France had a goal of making a settlement in West Africa. France used their military position to get African leaders to sign a peace treaty so they could continue to take over their land. Some of the French colonies include the North West part of Africa, and a little bit of China.

(From en.wikipedia.org)
