By 2010, Bengal tiger populations in India were estimated at 1,706-1,909. They matter because the presence of tigers in the forest is an indicator of the well being of the ecosystem. As the last great ape to be scientifically discovered, much still remains unknown about the bonobo.
Threats: Poaching- Humans hunt bonobos to eat them, trade them as bushmeat, keep them as pets and for use in traditional medicine.
Habitat Loss: Only part of the bonobo’s range lies in protected areas. A growing and moving human population, combined with slash-and-burn agriculture and commercial logging, leaves bonobos outside parks at risk of losing their homes.
What WWF Is Doing: monitoring populations- WWF has provided training, equipment and field supplies for the ICCN and non-governmental organizations conducting surveys of bonobo populations.
Protecting habitat: WWF helped to establish the Lac Tumba-Lediima Nature Reserve, which will help to protect this dwindling species.

(Elephants)
Facts: Elephants weight up to 8 tons. Elephants are distinguished by its massive body, large ears and a long trunk, which has many uses ranging from using it as a hand to pick up objects, as a horn to trumpet warnings, an arm raised in greeting to a hose for drinking water or bathing.
Why do they matter?: Elephants help maintain forest and savanna ecosystems for other species, and are integrally tied to rich biodiversity. Threat: Today, the biggest threat for elephants is the large-scale poaching to supply the illegal ivory trade.
Conservation Work: WWF works with TRAFFIC, the international wildlife trade monitoring network, to reduce the major threat that illegal and illicit domestic ivory markets pose to wild elephants. TRAFFIC also manages a global record of ivory seizures, called ETIS (Elephant Trade Information System) that helps to identify routes and countries of particular importance in illegal trade.
