Cyber Bulling is bullying that takes place on cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. This is a crucial topic because of how rapid technology is advancing. Cyber bullying can happen at anytime and can happen anonymously which makes it easier for students to do. Also if the source is deleted, it can be difficult to prove.
It is important to talk about this because a lot of the time one might post something they think is funny, and not realize that it hurts others. Students who are cyber bullied are subject to use alcohol and drug, skip school, experience in-person bullying, be unwilling to attend school, receive poor grades, have lower self-esteem, and have more health problem.

http://www.stopbullying.gov/cyberbullying/

Online safety is extremely important in today's society. Choosing safe websites is a crucial part of internet safety that often gets skipped over. For this reason, I chose this topic.

Typically, safe websites for kids include web addresses ending .edu, .net, .gov, and .com. Most educational websites are free of advertisements so that eliminates potential danger right there.

http://www.gcflearnfree.org/internetsafetyforkids/4.2
http://www.netliteracy.org/safe-connects/safe-connects-psas/

Using appropriate language on the internet is extremely important for children to learn about! Using appropriate language is important for constructing emails to teachers, employees, relatives, etc. It is also important that kids understand that what they post on social media accounts is not always as private as one may think. Lots of people use the internet everyday, so it is important to be respectful.

Basic rules to follow would be to always have correct spelling and grammar, be conscious of your attitude on the internet, be concise, and always proofread.

http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/frankm/573/netiquette.html

How to Teach About Using Appropriate Language

To teach this to future students, I would show them two different (pretend) emails that I sent to our school's principal, asking for more classroom materials. The first example email would be properly written out with correct punctuation and spelling, good attitude, and have a concise and to the point message.

The second example email would have the same content but be poorly written with incorrect grammar. I would throw in a bit of an attitude and not properly address the principal. My students will point out the differences in the two emails and correct my mistakes in the second one. This activity is short and to the point, which will broaden my students' netiquette knowledge, about how to use appropriate language.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is copying or stealing others work or ideas with out giving credit. Plagiarism is commonly thought of as copying and pasting someones work but it is much more than this. One can plagiarise another's ideas or simply plagiarism by not following the rules of giving credit correctly.
I chose this topic because students do not always know the serious consequenses of plagiarism. Students must be conscious of looking on websites and subconsciously taking information that is not theirs. This is important to teach students because they need to be aware of how exactly to cite and quote others of not only their words, but also their ideas.

http://www.plagiarism.org/plagiarism-101/what-is-plagiarism/

How to Teach about Cyber Bullying

To teach about Cyber Bullying I will split my class into groups of four or five. In groups I will designate one of my students as a bully and one as a cyber bully. The cyber bully will be anonymous and real bully will be given a script. I will tell everyone to close their eyes and the bully will read their script as the cyber bully hands out hurtful comments anonymously. The bully's script can be said in any tone they want. When the bully is done reading, the students will all open their eyes and read the comments from the cyber bully.
After the activity we will discuss the differences between the cyber bully and the bullying that was done in person. I will ask questions such as was this just as hurtful or more hurtful? Could you tell by the tone of the cyber bully if he or she meant it or not? This will teach students the realism of cyber bullying and how it is just as bad, if not worse than a real bully.
