1. Imperial rule did not go along with republican principles and the US did not like the other cultures because they are self absorbed and racist, like today.
2. Americans wanted expansion because they were afraid that Europe would take all the natural resources before the US could get to them. People were scared that, "the country might be closed out in the struggle for global markets and raw materials."
3. The need for foreign trade drove american expansion because "a quarter of the nations farm products and half its petroleum were sold overseas." Unfortunately we can not properly MLA format this quote. thank you for our time. Amen.
4. The United States of America wanted to become a naval power so they had to acquire "naval bases and coaling stations." thanks for coming to my TED talk.
5. The United States of American people that habituate north america, commonly termed as the USA, believed that it was their moral and religious duty to civilize the "uncivilized" or, "uplift backward people around this planet that we call Earth."

"European powers seized 10 million miles of territory" & "Trade unions in US grew fearful that the country might be closed out." The author is giving the example of how Europe was succeeding after they expanded and how the US was losing power due to not expanding.

3. America needed to expand in order to trade with other nations and make more money. "A quarter of the nation's farm products and half its petroleum were sold overseas."
4. The US needed to expand their navy in order to control trade. "Whoever rules the waves rules the world."
5.

1.one reason is that imperial rule seemed inconsistent with Americans republican principles. The second reason is that the US was not interested in acquiring people with different cultures, languages, and religions.
2.If America didn't expand the European powers would seize all of the valuable land before america could. "Unions greaw fearful that the country might be closed out in the struggle for global markets and raw materials".
3.It establishes the policy laid out for foreign trade. It promotes american expansion by stating Americans wanting to begin trading with the world. "By the 1890s, the American economy was increasingly dependent on foreign trade."
4. The expansion of america needed naval power and america needed naval ports and coaling stations to expand. "whoever rules the waves rules the world."
5. It supports American expansion because it states, "The mainstream Protestant religious denominations established religion missions in Africa and Asia, including 500 missions in China by 1890."

1. Imperial rule seemed inconsistent. US was uninterested in acquiring people with different cultures, languages, and religions.

2. It talks about the race for markets and materials. "In the United States, a growing number... grew fearful that the country might be closed out in the struggle for global markets and raw materials." This is talking about the growing fear in the US among the Governing bodies.

3. It talks about how the US needed to be more dependent on themselves and not on others. "By the 1890's, the american economy was increasingly dependent on foreign trade." If the US kept being dependent on foreign trade then the other countries could take advantage of the US. This could lead to the decline of the US.

4. It talks about the control of the sea and trade routes. "Whoever rules the waves rules the world." This is talking about how Alfred Thayer Mahan believed that national prosperity and power depended on control of the worlds sea-lanes.

5. It supports it because the US wanted to convert people to their religion. They "established religion missions in Africa and Asia." They were trying to convert as many people as they could to the Protestant religion.
