Survival: Children have to face survival on their own when their parents are too busy to care about their well-being.

Jeannette had to survive after she faced being on fire and ended up getting skin grafts after her mother left her alone to cook hot dogs at just the age of three. On page 9, she describes the moment where she was on fire, "I screamed. I smelled the burning and heard a horrible crackling as the fire singed my hair and eyelashes." she said. Jeannette wouldn't have to face going through something so traumatic if only her mother would feed her kids rather than only paying attention to her art. This picture describes what Jeannette saw after she felt a blaze of heat on her right side and turned and realized her skirt was on fire.

Unconditional Love: Unconditional love is when a person loves someone without limitations or conditions and accept them for who they are.

Although Jeannette and Rex never had the perfect relationship, they had unconditional love for each other and cared deeply for each other despite Rex's actions. On page 279, Jeannette visits her father after he gives her a call to meet in person where he informs her that he is deeply sick and dying after he got diagnosed with a rare disease that was incurable. After hearing the news, she describes that "Despite all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he had created in our lives, I could not imagine what my life would be like, without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else had." This means that no matter if her father didn't always make the best decision nor show her the ideal love she deserved, she had never felt more love from anyone else and treasured every good memory with him. I specifically chose this picture because it a great example of when Rex would take his children on adventures and made memories when he wasn't out drinking or gambling.

Acceptance: The children need to accept that their parents are never going to change because they're stuck in their own ways and are ignorant.

On page 255, Rose Mary describes life being homeless after getting kicked out of Loris place after not respecting her boundaries. Jeannette replies by saying "You can't just live like this" and her mother replies by saying "Being homeless is an adventure." As much as Jeannette, Brian, and Lori want to help their parents out, they refuse the help and don't want to be seen as a "charity case" and remain being shelter-resistant. I chose this picture because it shows someone that needs a hand but refuses to take it. It is metaphor to describe that Rex and Rose Mary refused help from their children when they finally had the financial capability to help them when their whole life they had been seeking money.

Betrayal/Disappointment: When children are betrayed by their parents, they lose respect for them and are left feeling disappointed.

On pages 228-230, After Lori and Jeannette had been saving their money for nine months with the help of brian, baby sitting, and Loris side hustle, they would stash their money in a plastic piggy bank named "Oz". One day, someone had slashed Oz with a knife and stole all the money. Jeannette knew it was her father and after telling Lori she stayed up all night to confront him. He refused to admit what he had done and instead pretended like he had no idea what they were talking about. Jeannette shows her disappointment when she asks Rex "Why are you doing this us, Dad? Why?", on page 229. Shortly after, Lori expresses her anger by saying "Ill never get out of here.", but Jeannette knew Lori had to to get out or else she wouldn't either. Both girls are disappointed and feel betrayed by their father's actions and don't understand why he keeps treating them this way. I chose this picture because it is an example of Oz being slashed by Rex in this part of the book.

Coming of Age: When children move out of their parents house and into a new city on their own, they have reached adulthood and maturity.

On page 236-237, Jeannette had made the decision to move to New York City as soon as the school year was out. She couldn't wait any longer and had a hundred dollars saved, enough to get started her in New York. On page 241, Jeannette is entering a new chapter in her life and describes her feelings after entering the bus, "At first I resolved not to turn around. I wanted to look ahead where I was going, not back at at what I was leaving, but then I turned away." This implies that Jeannette didn't want to ever go back to living in the conditions she was living in for her whole life or with her parents and was ready to leave it all behind, even though she was a bit hesitant at the end. This picture represent what Jeannette saw on her way to see Lori in New York.

After years of Rex promising his children to build them a Glass Castle and moving from place to place to find the "perfect spot" for the glass castle, he never lived up to his promise. On page 279, Rex is fighting a rare and uncurbable disease. Him and Jeannette are reminiscing on old memories together. Rex chuckled and said "We had some times, didn't we?" "Never Did build that Glass Castle." he added. Jeannette replies with "No. But we had fun planning it". Jeannette knew her father would never build the glass castle but never doubted him. Instead she learned to accept it and move on. Although she never got the Glass Castle she was promised, she still cherished all the memories she made planning it. This picture represent an example of how the Glass Castle Rex described would've looked like.
