This is the National Natural Park Uramba Bahía Málaga, where whales arrive every six months. My parents have lived there for many years; my dad works as a tour operator, and my mom has been a teacher in the area for more than 15 years. I spent most of my childhood surrounded by this natural beauty, learning to appreciate the landscapes, local wildlife, and vibrant community. Growing up in such a unique place instilled in me a deep connection to nature and pride in my Colombian heritage. This environment has strongly shaped my values and sense of identity, grounding me in my roots and inspiring my outlook on life.

Moving to Australia brought both excitement and a fair share of cultural surprises. I quickly noticed differences in social interactions, like the casual and direct communication style, which at first felt a bit unusual compared to the more formal and warm greetings I was used to in Colombia. The food was another big change – dishes like Vegemite and barbecue traditions were new and sometimes challenging to appreciate! Adjusting to Australia’s diverse climate and relaxed lifestyle taught me to be more adaptable and open to new experiences. These differences helped me see my own culture from a new perspective and highlighted the unique aspects of my Colombian identity.

My experiences in Colombia and Australia have deeply influenced my understanding of identity. Growing up with Colombian values taught me the importance of community, tradition, and resilience, while living in Australia introduced me to new ways of thinking and encouraged adaptability and open-mindedness. These cultural experiences have shaped my beliefs and perspectives, helping me realize how much our surroundings influence who we are. I now see my identity as a blend of these two cultures, each bringing unique values that continue to shape my outlook on life

To answer the question To what extent are we aware of the impact of culture on what we believe or know?, I think culture is deeply embedded in us, sometimes in ways we don’t fully recognize. Growing up with these Colombian values, traditions, and experiences has influenced how I view the world, shaping both my beliefs and my sense of self. Culture acts as a lens through which we interpret and understand everything around us, often without realizing it. Thank you for listening to my journey of cultural identity.
