Laura Greenfield created a documentary over the course of 10 years to explore the culture surrounding wealth, money, and the upper class. In her work, we see certain photographs taken of specific moments showing different scenes of wealth. In one photo in particular we see a young girl sitting at a table in a very decadent room. She is staring at her reflection in a handheld mirror while fixing her hair. Greenfield uses positioning to shape the reader's view of the girl to be superficial and self-obsessed.

The first thing a reader notices when viewing a photograph, is the action happening. This shapes a lot of what the reader will think about the subject of the picture. In this photograph by Greenfield, we see the subject is a young woman. Her positioning is up close to the camera and everything around her is faded softly, making her the only thing in clear focus. Making her be very close up to the camera makes the reader understand the subject is important. Also, by fading out everything except the subject, Greenfield shapes the woman to be very self-important. Furthermore, the subject's actions are also important to the positioning of the photograph, as the subject's actions will create a message on the subject itself. The woman is fixing her already perfectly done hair while looking at herself in a tiny, decorated, hand-held mirror. Greenfield has the subject bring attention to detail, her hair, which she shows off, under a disguise, which is what many wealthy people do. The subject fixing her perfectly styled hair shows the reader she is superficial. Additionally, the subject is staring at herself in a handheld mirror. The reader seeing the subject hold a small mirror up just to look at herself will show her to be self-obsessed. Greenfield does this with small details such as the setting not being a usual place you stare at yourself, a dinner table. As well as the mirror being handheld with a handle, which are not very common in the present day. All these small details of the positioning of the subject amount to Greenfield shaping the subject as being vain and self-obsessed.

In conclusion, this photograph shows Greenfield portraying the wealthy to be superficial and arrogant. She uses the specific position of the camera and of the subject to portray this message.

From the beginning of the story, Gabriel Garcia Marquez exposes us to the culture where sexual assult has no consequences and is not punished by law. This can be seen through the main character’s, Santiago Nassar, actions. Santiago Nasar has no hesitation to demonstrate sexual assault towards Divina Flor, taking into account that she is only fourteen years old. She describes it later by mentioning “He grabbed my whole pu**y” (Marquez, 12). Furthemore she says “It was what he always did when he caught me alone in some corner of the house” (Marquez, 12). With Divina’s perspective, Marquez illustrates the extent to which the abuse occurred, and shows how Nassar's repetition of behaviour has no consequences. This behaviour establishes the norms of the time within the story and how in this specific culture, there are no consequences for a males abuse towards females.

Through the vulgar word choice, Marquez sets up a violent atmosphere around Nassar, which gives a very negative impression of his actions.

In the painting, we see two men with a table between them. One of the men we see only the back of his head, and a small portion of his shoulders. The other we see his full torso and full face. The perspective and positioning of this painting shows the power imbalance between them. Because of the perspective, we are only able to see one of their faces. This suggests that only the man visible, his emotions and his actions, are important. Additionally, the positioning makes the man in grey the centre of the painting, therefore the most important and the first thing a viewer sees. This adds to the established powerful position he is in. Furthermore, the man in the centre is much bigger than the other, his entire torso and chest being very large and his stance almost towering over the other man. The other man has a small frame and his downturned head makes him seem submissive. And so, the positioning of the men and the perspective of the painting establish the great power imbalance between the two characters.

This painting is a reference to the questioning scene in the book “The Stranger” by Albert Camus. In this scene we have the main character, Meursault, being questioned by a police official. The symbolism and colour in this scene is quite important in the overall theme of the book, as the idea of faith, and lack thereof, is introduced. Firstly, the symbolism of the crucifix to communicate the role of faith in the meaning of life. It is made very big and much lighter than the other colours to draw the eyes to it, establishing importance. Secondly, Meursault (the small man) refusing to believe there is a god, while the police officer (the bigger man) insisting there is , is a parallel shown through the colours in the painting as well. There is a light hue around the police officer contrasting with the darkness of the background. This gives him almost an aura of divinity. Paired with holding the symbol of the cross, this shows that the man's faith gives his life light and meaning compared to Meursault. Furthermore, the colours used in this painting, all apart from the police officer, are dark and sombre. This suggests that life without faith is also dark and sombre.
