The Market Revolution

Transcendentalists believed that freedom resided in an individual's power to remake oneself, and possibly the world. During the Market Revolution, people realized that the revolution resulted in them having much less freedom than they had 50-100 years ago. People started to produce goods for sales to others, who were often very far away, instead of producing goods for themselves. Technological improvements in transportation and communication made it much more easier for people to sell goods. The Limited Liability Corporation enabled investors to finance business ventures without being personally responsible for losses other than their own, and the federal government built roads and canals, where its highest court protected businesses. Also, factories resulted in more people doing industrial work, but women were paid less than men because it was assumed that they wouldn't be a family's sole breadwinner.

Romanticism vs Transcendentalism

Romanticism and Transcendentalism, two literary movements that took place in America, both occurred roughly between 1840-1860. However, they have some qualities that make them completely different from each other. For example, Transcendentalism is hugely based on the idea of God, while Romanticism has less to do with God. Romanticism focused on the guilt, misery, and sin of the human spirit, while Transcendentalism focused on the ultimate goodness of people. Also, the writing style of Romanticism used large contrasts between good and bad, while Transcendentalism related more towards the senses than to reasons and facts. In conclusion, Transcendentalism and Romanticism had significant differences with their views and ideas.

On page 209 Thoreau is trying to explain that people in society focus on what effects them. "Hardly a man takes a half hour's nap after dinner, but when he wakes he holds up his head and asks, 'whats the news?' as if the rest of mankind had stood his sentinels. some give directions to be waked every half hour, doubtless for no other purpose; and then, to pay for it, they tell what they have dreamed" (Thoreau, 209)

On page 211 Thoreau is saying that the human body is one with its surroundings and that a person can never be alone. He talks about the liberty of being in nature because it is congenial to him also how in nature he is still surrounded by living species. The life surrounding him is all connected; predator, prey, plants and animals. Thoreau Argument is that we can never be alone. We are in a universe full of life and he doesn't think there is a defining line that separates a person into being in complete solitude.

The song Survivor, by Destiny's Child, parallels with Transcendentalism because they both talk about being self-reliant. In the song, Destiny's child says that she doesn't need this specific person in her life, and that she is doing a lot better without him. In Transcendentalism, it is believed that people are at their best when they are truly independent. The song also relates to Thoreau because of the same reason of self-reliance. Similar to the song, Thoreau stresses the importance and good of solitude and non-conformity. In conclusion, Transcendentalists believe that it is best to be self-reliant, and it shown in many ways, like songs or stories.
