As a student, feeling like I belong somewhere helps my social skills, self esteem, and develop the ability to network. I have had experiences in the past during my K-12 years where I had always felt like I did not belong (since I attended a predominately white schools) and it affected my self esteem and I became shy. I did not have a lot of friends, I was not the popular kid, I was easily intimidated by others, and isolated myself from my peers. When I started going to college it helped a lot because there were others like me who thought the same and liked the same things. I started to have more confidence in myself and helped me make more friends and become more social with my peers. I have met so many people and I have moved a round a lot which has allowed to see different communities and meet all types of people.

My first year in college I did at PLNU, which was a really poor fit for me. I'm a pretty individualistic person, but PLNU has a pretty strictly defined culture that I didn't fit into. As a result, I ended up in an environment that I didn't feel like I belonged in, and it made going to class really difficult. I didn't have a group to study with, or who I could call to ask questions, and it stunk! It made me realize how important it is to have peers and teachers that are available and supportive, because going through this journey's a lot harder to do on your own! I was too afraid to approach people since most people saw me a certain way and it made me feel way too alienated to communicate with anyone, even when I was struggling.

I struggle to make friends in my classes because I am usually much older than they are and I find we do not have much in common. I also find that a lot of the students fresh out of high school who are in their first or second semesters of college are unable to respect the professors and will talk during the lesson. I go about school and work the same way, if along the way I find someone I genuinely connect with, then great, we can attempt to form a friendship. But ultimately, I am there to get an education or a paycheck at the end of the day, and don't have time to be distracted. It's hard for me to relate to younger classmates or co-workers, so I tend to keep my distance and do my own thing.

However in my career and throughout it, I have always waited two weeks after my arrival to scope things out. During that two weeks I observed to see my troops and colleagues and what their personalities were like. I would then curtail my training facet and speaking ability to theirs. I figure that way we are all in the same page.

Heather Mitchem If a student feels like they don't belong in the classroom it could make it hard for them to make connections with their classmates and teacher. They might not learn as much or not be as willing to see other's view points. They could be miss out on learning about new ideas because they will not feel as comfortable participating in class.

Balancing school, work, and a family is tough. It can become very overwhelming sometimes. For example, we had family in town this weekend from Thursday to Sunday and I had three essays due for school and two classes to attend, but the family wanted me to be with them. This where self-care comes in. I know that I need to take a deep breath and think before I react, and that saves me a lot of problems with my wife and suegra. I found a way to balance as much as I could, but I still had to stay up until 1:00am to study. Still, I got almost everything done.
As far as self-care goes, I enjoy cycling, hiking, and have recently started meditating. Mindfulness training has really helped me keep my cool, and exercise is a good way to relieve stress. Unfortunately, I am almost 50 and my body just doesn't hold up as well as it used to.
