Meanwhile, Byzantium was losing considerable territory to the invading Seljuk Turks, who defeated the Byzantine Army at the battle of Manzikirt in 1071 and went on to gain control over much of Anatolia. Their behavior in the region works towards these ends. They regularly attack Shia holy sites, including a large Shia mosque in Kuwait in 2015. As their caliphate requires large amounts of land ISIS is aggressively territorial, claiming provinces in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. The caliphate also has religious significance for they believe it precipitates the apocalypse where God will come to judge all humanity.
