The crusades were a series of holy wars called by popes with the promise of indulgences for those who fought in them and directed against external and internal enemies of Christendom for the recovery of Christian property or in defense of the Church or Christian people.By the end of the 11th century, Western Europe had emerged as a significant power in its own right, though it still lagged far other Mediterranean civilization such as that of the byzantine empire(formerly the eastern half of the Roman Empire) and the Islamic empire of the Middle East and North Africa. Meanwhile, Byzantium was losing considerable territory to the invading Seljuk Turks, who defeated the Byzantine Army at the battle of Manzikirt in 1071 and went on to gain control over much of Anatolia. After years of chaos and civil war, the general Alexius Comnenus seized the Byzantine throne in 1081 and consolidated control over the remaining empire as Emperor Alexius I.

In 1095, the Emperor of Byzantium appealed to Pope Urban II for help. Pope Urban II asked the knights of Europe to go on a Crusade to win back Jerusalem for Christianity. ... The loss of Jerusalem was a terrible blow to the Muslims. For them, Jerusalem was, and still is, the third holy city of Islam.

Third, the people wanted their sins to be forgiven, to go to heaven or to take back goods from the Holy Lands or because they had committed a crime and were forced by the church to go on a Crusade. And some people just went on Crusades for fun. Taking back Jerusalem was the main reason why Crusades occurred.ISIS, or the Islamic State, is a militant Islamist group that follows a Salafi-Wahabi doctrine of Sunni Islam. Founded in 2006, as an off-shoot of the al-Qaeda Iraq branch, by Jordanian jihadi fighter Abu Mus‘ab al-Zarqawi the group holds two main objectives: purify Islam under a single uncompromising style of worship (which requires the complete elimination of Shia Islam), and establish a caliphate (an Islamic religious state) that would rule over all Muslims. Their behavior in the region works towards these ends. They regularly attack Shia holy sites, including a large Shia mosque in Kuwait in 2015. As their caliphate requires large amounts of land ISIS is aggressively territorial, claiming provinces in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. The caliphate also has religious significance for they believe it precipitates the apocalypse where God will come to judge all humanity. ISIS often uses the idea of crusading as a cultural tool in its rhetoric giving us unique insight into the group’s ideology and their understandings of what history is, and can do.
