ICT the game changer in 4th Industrial Revolution. It is no secret that South Africa is lagging behind in the use of ICT. If the country wants to play a major role in global markets it has to create and facilitate oppertunities to be competitive in ICT. The basic human right of equal access to educational resources for rural schools is also in danger. The 4th IR has now been a subject for much discussion for many years. Unfortunately the talk is not backed up with credible action on the part of government and business. The slow pace in moving the country forward will have a negative impact on jobs and lively hoods. The rich and stronger can survive the lower cost of business or have the means for children to access ICT. Instead of investing profits into upgrading infrastructure operators are more interested in getting as much profits as possible for investors at the expense of the poor. Rural communities still complain about access to IT to eg buy electricity, replenish airtime and performing certain bank related transaction. Schools in rural area also is much more disadvantaged than those in urban areas. So the right to education is also severely impacted by government inability to Service the rural school system. The rural child if not already due to poverty start the race late they now also face to compete with urban children having better access to ICT. One can only imagine that the cycle of poverty will repeat itself if rural children not brought into the mainstream ICT educational system. The government recently promised free data to every household. No explanation was given as to how government will achieve this. It would be unfair it this becomes reality of the rural school system do not benefit or the rural household will have to move to back of line. What do u think, will government enable us to become competitive on ICT? Will rural households benefit from ICT?
