I have come here for gold and I refuse to leave without it. I also am not the only one. It seems that with every 10 people there is 1 Chinese man. The selfish and greedy Americans had forced us out of certain mines just so they won't have much competition. Also, how dare they impose a tax on us, foreigners, $20 a month just because we aren't Americans? But we will and did push through. There are so many Chinese stores around that we have gotten a name!  "Chinatown"! I had 3 options:
 1. Sail 18,000 miles around South America
and up the Pacific coast suffering from
storms, seasickness, and spoiled food.
2. Sail to the narrow Isthmus of Panama,
cross overland (and risk catching a
deadly tropical disease), and then sail to
California.
3. Travel the trails across North America-
braving rivers, prairies, mountains, and
all the hardships of the trail.
If that wasn't bad enough, because we did not have our normal materials, prices for extra tools were outrageous.
Also, it was very crowded! immigrant,  persuaded the governor to grant him 50,000 acres in the
unsettled Sacramento Valley. In 1848, Sutter sent a carpenter named James Marshall to build a
sawmill on the nearby American River. One day Marshall inspected the
