First Radium was used in WWI for X-rays to quickly diagnose and treat wounded soldiers. Also, Radium is used, very directly and cautiously, to kill cancerous cells. Finally, a small amount of radium could be used in paints for various things, so it could glow in the dark. (Of course production of this has stopped due to the harm radium can cause.)

In the beginning stages of discovering Radium, the Curie's discovery was questioned. Some believed that their discovery was too small, since only very minute samples had been extracted from the pitchblende. Yet, controversy was soon cleared once the couple vigorously went to work "mining" enough radium for a proper sample.

Marie Curie's first political involvement consisted of her participation in the revolutionary organization against Russian occupation of that part of Poland, which forced her to flee to avoid potential backlash. Curie was also loyal to France during WWI, driving ambulance with x-rays in the frontline of war. Although, she was declined from the French Academy of Sciences because she a female. Still she was an acclaimed revolutionary feminist that opened doors for other women by being the 1st women to have won the Nobel Prize, being the 1st person to have won 2 Nobel Prizes in different science disciplines, and for being the 1st female professor of the Sorbonne.
