I got a great assessment tool for Board members giving them and me the ability to gage their ability to be stewards of the work of DEI. I used it later on in the week with the EMMD Board sub-committee. It was a great entry point for them and they are excited to do the work going forward.

AA

I'm Not Racist Am I? movie

I found this film very interesting. First of all, it was filmed in 2014, so those students are my age. Plus, Pierce Freelon made an appearance in it, and he's been one of my role models for a couple years now (go NC!).
Most notable:
how powerful and seemingly helpful the workshops seemed to be for Kahleek in terms of naming and feeling seen in his experiences of race.
Martha's white fragility
I resonated with some of the things that Anna said about how she wanted to be white (compare to Martha's desire to be Black or Latina) and felt white if it wasn't for looking in the mirror. During the movie she seemed to grow her racial consciousness and began questioning her white mom about "why did you think it's a good idea to have us live in this white neighborhood?"
I was also struck by the interracial relationship of the biracial girl's parents. Her Black father voiced a lot of color-blind ideology, and her mother was on the same wavelength. It reminds me of how oftentimes our parents' interracial relationships are not necessarily a sign of a healthy racial identity or worldview but rather the opposite--a suppression and denial of one's own racial identity.

Sydnie
