this was a top secret operation that even the president didn't know about for some time where the U.S. brought its top scientists to Los Alamos to research and create a bomb using nuclear fission. this project revolutionized atomic science and brought a new age of war - wars of deterrence - rather than battles by creating a weapon so powerfull it could destroy the planet if used too much.

the U.S. invasion of France. although things went good on other fronts, Normandy was a slaughter. it went down as one of the bloodiest battles in history.

Battle of Iwo Jima - Feb 19 1945

this battle gave the Americans the island of Iwo Jima, which served as an emergency landing site for aircraft attacking Japan. this site saved the lives of 24,000 airmen

Auschwitz liberation - Jan 24 1945
