So far, I have explored the article "6 Risks to Avoid When Implementing Personalized Learning". Risk #4 really struck me, not because I think there is a "wrong" school in my district to begin implementing personalized learning, but because I think it is important to remember each school in the district should personalize its roll-out of personalized learning.

One question that I have:
When implementing PL in each building, how will each building communicate to the others?

I viewed two videos about the implementation of PLC in Fulton County and Syracuse City Schools. Both communities seem to have embraced and been pleased with PLC in their schools.
I also read the two "6 Risks" articles. I think some of our greatest hurdles will be in deciding where/who receives the technology first and beyond, what the technology will be, and for me most importantly the training of all of our staff in how to use PLC in the classroom effectively. It will do our school community little good to have all of thiw technology and not use it to its full capacity for student success and achievement.

The 6 Risks articles are a quick, realistic, and clear launching point for all the "what ifs" I have been thinking. A few of the most prominent thoughts/feelings that stuck with me include clear messaging, realistic timeline, and identifying clear criteria for success. Messaging should come from within the building and not solely from an outside vendor. In order to have ultimate "buy in" from teachers the message should be presented from a peer and trusted ally. Setting a clear timeline for stakeholders is also a key element to successful roll out of PL. It is not always clear how long, what steps need to be taken, or what completion will look like to all stakeholders involved. Clearly communicating this in non educational jargon is key to building community understanding and participation. Sometimes we can get so into the "work" of projects that we forget that we are working towards a goal. This goal needs to be identified and clearly defined so that all involved know when/how success is reached. Is it a date?...a score?...a specific procedure?...or is it ongoing with check points along the way? This all needs to be clearly communicated as well as the why. Why is this better or more effective. Why is this how students should be learning vs. ways of the past.

I can see that it will likely be a very big challenge to maintain if there is no plan. I'm thinking about how each building in the
District is in a different place, and I'm wondering about how to manage both consistency & personalizing in our approach to implementation.

The piece I continue to be most apprehensive about is parent buy-in.
How do we get buy-in from teachers and administration but at the same time make sure people truly understand PL? There are a lot of misconceptions that are coming to the surface around PL. Some think they are already doing it, some think it is throwing their kids in front of a computer, some think it is the end all, be all of engagement and is the magical mystery cure to low test scores and misbehavior in classrooms.

Some smaller districts do not have a fully developed curriculum each grade level and subject area. I think Ed Elements has done a good job building the case and empowering districts to develop mission/vision statements and have been clear about successful rollouts.

after viewing the videos it is becoming more clear that personalized learning will not always, nor should it, look the same for each classroom, teacher, student or school. Many variables come into play such as poverty levels, size of schools/districts, willingness to commit or implement change. It seems that much more of the resistance comes from the adults, and students seem excited and very willing to jump right in. It seems more reflective of the way they already approach the world. It seems important to ensure that the correct utilization of technology and programs is investigated to ensure the best success for PL to move forward effectively.
