An estimated 7.4 billion barrels of oil has been discovered in Dakota right near the Canadian/American border, and many people are protesting against having this major pipeline built to move oil. It would “destroy sites of great historic, religious and cultural significance.

It would cross through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois, and would go through or next to Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, and Standing Rock Indian Reservation, disturbing the land and the people who live there.

The people who want the oil are fighting to say that this wouldn't only be an economic boon, it would also drop the amount of dependence we have for foreign oil, we would have an abundance of our own for a while. The people fighting against making the pipeline are saying it would disturb and destroy ancient burial grounds, and also might cause contamination and environmental harm due to greenhouse gasses and so forth.

For the people who don't want to make the pipeline and try to remove the oil, they would lose some of the sacred land, and could even have to deal with contamination. The people who want the oil would benefit not only themselves, but all of the U.S., by supplying 7.4 billion barrels (that's quite a bit of oil)
