Capturing value for use in the future

When an organisation engages resources (ie contractors or employees) to deliver work but has not optimised the systems in place to capture, store and retrieve that work for future use, it’s value is limited to the point in time the work was generated and delivered. The future potential value of that work is lost when the resource (i.e employees or contractors) leaves the organisation. The impact is greater when there is a high turnover of staff. Another example is when a consultant delivers a scope of work but does not transmit full value by building capability within the organisation to carry that work forward. Therefore when their contract ends, the value of that work diminishes over time as there is no one within the organisation that can build on the consultant’s work. The organisation could increase the value generated by employees and contractors by ensuring a component of their work requires that they capture their work within a system, or if a system does not exist that there is a requirement that one is established. The other way that value could be captured is by stipulating a capability building and knowledge sharing component to the work so that value created is shared and can be retained by the organisation as resources come and go.

Capturing the Value We Create

(As a consultant I have witnessed that) Organisations (can) often generate immense value — through compliance uplift, digital transformation, or stakeholder trust — but fail to capture it. Value leaks when:

Insights from regulatory programs aren’t embedded into BAU

Vendors commercialise co-developed tools without attribution

Engagement strategies aren’t codified for future reuse

At WSU and in past roles, I’ve seen the need to:

Codify onboarding and delivery frameworks

Embed benefits realisation into governance cycles

Protect IP and uplift internal capability

Communicate impact through executive storytelling

Value capture is a discipline, and should not be treated as a by-product. We need to design for it and (be able to) measure it.
