"As channels proliferated over subsequent decades, it became much easier to avoid exposure to politics by switching the channel-and of course the Internet has exponentially broadened the choices." (6)

Younger people tend to be less informed about current events because they turn to entertainment rather than getting caught up with the news. This makes it seem like they have little to no interest in politics or activism, as it suggests that youth deem this entertainment to be more important.
I believe this apparent disinterest is caused by a desire to avoid seeing bad news that they cannot affect.

"And young people have grown up in a fragmented media environment, in which hundreds of TV channels and millions of internet sites have provided them with a rich and varied socialization experience but have also enabled them to easily avoid political events." (7)

Modern media has been both beneficial and detrimental in terms of youth political involvement. Today's technology allows youth to have easy, immediate access to the current news at any time. It also provides hundreds of ways to pay no mind to news in favor of entertainment like social media.

"Young people are some of the most active members of their communities and are devoting increasing amounts of their time to direct service work and volunteerism." (7)

While youth may seem to turn a blind eye to social issues, they are the ones taking action to help alleviate the conflict in their communities. I think that the perceived political apathy is caused by youth believing that they cannot make any difference in terms of politics, and so resort to small scale service. They don't think they can make a difference when it comes to large problems and instead focus on more tangible advocacy.
