The strong vertical rhythm defines the plaza by night and gives a sense of enclosure without heavy architecture.

Technology: originally tall concrete/metal poles with multiple uplight/reflector fittings; as Medellín modernized its public lighting the city has also implemented LED and energy-efficient retrofits and broader LED street-lighting programs to reduce energy, glare and maintenance (citywide “Medellín is light” / urban LED projects). Use of low-glare optics and scheduled operation is common in these upgrades.

How the lighting design supports SDG3 and SDG11 ?

SDG3 — mental & physical well-being: improved night-time lighting increases perceived and real safety, encourages evening use of public space (walking, leisure), and supports social interaction — all of which contribute to community mental health and decreased fear of crime. The transformation of a once-unsafe plaza into an active public space is an example of lighting contributing to wellbeing.

SDG11 — safer, inclusive, sustainable cities: the project is a small but clear case of public-realm regeneration using light as the intervention: it increases nighttime accessibility and visibility, supports economic activity, and (when upgraded to LED/efficient fittings) reduces energy consumption and maintenance burdens compared with older luminaires — aligning with sustainable urbanization goals. Broader Medellín LED programs also show how energy-efficient lighting can reduce emissions while improving service.

However, neurodiverse children, especially those with autism, experience space differently through sound, touch, and movement rather than just visuals. Understanding their needs has shifted my design approach from aesthetics-based to behaviour-based thinking.

I initially saw playgrounds as places for fun, but through this research, I now understand that they can also function as therapeutic spaces. A well-designed playscape is not just recreational — it can support healing, regulation, and confidence-building. As a future landscape architect, I feel more responsible for designing with empathy rather than just creativity.
