What exactly is meant by essay competition?
We invite students and graduates to write critical reflections on the two topics mentioned in our email request. 1200-1500 words in length. Voluntarily sharing individual viewpoints of experience gained as food professionals or students.

What are the criteria for the essays?
The detailed criteria for judging have not been specified yet. This will be done as part of the "project work" in June/July. However, the criteria will follow common criteria for essay assessments of other competitions such as: clarity, comprehensibility, creativity, originality, etc.

What does the jury decide about - the winners or the essays to take part in the conference?
The jury will decide about the best essays, i.e., the winners of the essay competitions.
To be precise, the jury will decide:
a.	The 15 best essays from each group, i.e., students and alumni (essays published in a book and announced as short runners in the competition at the conference in December).
b.	The first, second, and third place winners (monetary prices and awarded at the conference in December).

When is the conference held?
The conference will be held in December 2021, the exact date is to be confirmed (probably 1st od 2nd week of December).

How many winners will there be?
The short listed and announced essay writers will be 30 in total. 15 for each group, i.e., students and alumni. Three winners (1st, 2nd. 3rd place) for each group.

What does it mean to be a winner - a price?
The winners of 3 best essays will be awarded 400/300/200 euros.
The 15 best essays will be collected in a book (published by Kassel University Press). A hard copy will be sent to all winners.
The 15 best essays winners will be announced at an online awarding ceremony in December 2021 (Witzenhäuser Konferenz), to which all graduates and students are cordially invited.

How many essays do I have to judge? All?
A team of students will pre-evaluate and pre-select incoming essays so that you can focus on a smaller number of essays.
Currently, we do not have any approximate numbers we can promise you as we do not know how many essays will be submitted.

Is there also to be judged about the winners? Please explain the process and the interlink with the other judges (program directors).
We provide a pre-evaluation on which basis a more refined discussion can take place among the jury members. We will ask you individually to rate the essays and then bring the evaluation together for a joint final discussion (online if you are available or by taking into account your feedback via email).

Normally for a conference an abstract of 500 words is sufficient (and not 1500 words) or is it to be presented at the conference?
The 15 best essays will be collected in a book for each group, to make it not too thin, we decided to go with 1500 words of essays. Moreover, this is not the basis for a more comprehensive conference presentation (i.e., not the same as a conference abstract) but the essays do represent the whole contribution made by a writer. Depending on the final format of the conference workshop, we might ask the winners to read aloud the essays. The other short listed essays will be made accessible through the book (open access source).
