For tools like the MESH maps, Learning Designs but also more generally for tools for teacher information (e.g. the configurable Blackboard analytics), in my line of research I always get comments from teachers that they do not have time to engage with such complex tools. Any comments?

I think there's some work to be done at senior management level to recognize that engaging with technology takes time, training and strategy. These costs need to be considered and teachers supported to adopt new tools and practices.

This afternoon, we have been introduced to some good apps and we can all see the benefits, but how will teachers know from the plethora of apps available, which will be effective in helping them to improve their practice and learning outcomes .. who will distill app info?

Create an app that allows teachers to record issues as they arise, then searches for relevant info in the background, and presents it when they have time.

A teaching app is good when it's open-ended enough to be flexibly used with different age groups and subject areas. That's the most powerful way to use apps in the classroom. (Agree with Fits within a design!)

Some teachers say that they do not favour strict, timed lesson plans, preferring to go into the lesson with a concept to develop and an interesting starting point or two. With flexible schemes of work teachers can be creative and respond to the needs of their class during any one lesson or series of lessons. Any comments?

Fits within a design, not around it

A good app should seamlessly suggest itself for inclusion in a lesson plan. Not require a lesson to be planned around it.

The medical world has a raft of professional writers and designers working between the researchers and the practitioners to make the research data accessible. Usually in digests, monographs, even popular press. Much of this is funded - usually by big pharma. How can this be replicated in education?

That's been my experience with working with teachers. Very good teachers too. But I still think the ability to use a Ld tool is crucial in promoting collaboration.

The LDer is for planning not for controlling. If you just want to begin with a nice idea and go with wherever it goes, then don't use this. Use a post-it note. This is a design that is very dependent on the skills of the teacher, it would not transfer easily.

Learning designs can have a wide degree of flexibility. There is also a notion of designing for real time orchestration, or "just in time design".

Different tools offer different levels of flexibility / rigour.

Yes but the teachers need the means to create these.

Quizzes do that to some degree, but are often not great pedagogy

I think the Learning Designer helps with

that because you can think about what kind of

experience you want for your learners and then

choose the tool that helps create that experience
