Florida educator Steven A. Field, MD teaches in the Hillsborough County School District. A high school science teacher, Steven A. Field, MD helps Florida students build up their skills in biology, earth science, and more.

A study published in the International Journal of Science Education shows that 65 percent of scientists became interested in science before middle school. The study also suggested that while men are most likely to be inspired by activities at home, many women first became interested in science at school.

This highlights the importance of high-quality science education in the early grades, when children may begin their lifelong interest in science. As these students age, a shift toward reasoning and critical thinking skills can help them become even better scientists.

Educators are advocating for a greater focus on problem-solving skills at the secondary level, especially in high schools. Experts suggest reducing the emphasis on rote memorization and focusing more on the scientific process. Students could benefit more from inquiry-based laboratories and other exercises designed to build up their critical thinking.
