PD4 (20-21) - Bias & Microaggressions Video Reflection by Debora Speirs

Post ONE reflection on the class Padlet. Write your name in the TITLE then compose a response to one or more of these questions: What did you learn while watching the video? Why are implicit biases and microaggressions dangerous?
Have you ever experienced implicit bias, microaggressions, and/or judgement? If so, how did this situation make you feel and how did you respond? What can we do as a class to avoid implicit bias, believing and affirming microaggressions, and passing premature judgement on one another?

something that i have experienced about my race is the question "why did ur BLACK dad marry a WHITE women"? and the crazy part is this question is mostly asked by family members. I have a younger sister and we never really understood what this meant. Its like my dad should feel shameful for having children with a white women, same for my mom. like is this no aloud or something? it kind of stuck with me because whenever i'm with those family member i feel not welcomed because my skin is darker then theirs.

Something that I have experienced was about my gender when I was at work I had someone supervising me they gave me there number for any questions and one day they came to work looking a little off or sad so then I asked them (Through text if they were ok) Then like a week later another manager comes to me saying that they have a Boyfriend and honestly I felt disrespected because I only have intentions of asking as a Friend. Since I am a boy and she is a girl they thought I was trying to date them.

Microaggressions are dangerous because even if you do it on purpose or not, you might've offend that person or made them feel bad about themselves. I relate to this because I remember a lot of times me being told I was well spoken by adults, or other students saying I don't sound black. But I've learned to ignore it.

Microaggressions are dangerous, because you are judging people and making assumptions based on there looks it may not come off disrespectful but it is. I've had experienced colorism with friends at the moment I didn't really understand I just thought it was there preference, but when they started saying things like "she's cute for a black girl" or "darkskins are ugly" I had to talk to them about. I've learned over the years people could be racist, colorist, or make microaggressions and they won't even realized it.

Microaggression is dangerous because you don't know how much the things you say to someone effects them and stays with them and, everyone deals with things like that different. You should never make assumptions about someone just off the way they look, talk, act, gender, or race. As a class to avoid this we should just respect each other and accept everyone for who they are regardless of their race or gender.

You might say something in a certain way, however another person can take it another way. Microaggression is harmful because of the impact that it causes on others regardless of it being intentional or not. Judging someone or creating assumptions about someone without knowing their background stories is not fair and is upsetting. As a young hispanic women, I have endured this type of stuff in school and in general. I have been called "too light to be a mexican", "you don't talk like what you look like", "you're cute for a mexican". However the one "joke" that makes me the most mad is the immigrant jokes people had made about my parents. If you don't know my parents or their struggles, do not talk about them. Please and thank you.
