Focusing on lesson planning, specifically feature five, adaption of content to all levels of student proficiency, will help me identify expectations for myself on how I will lead the learning and will help me set clear goals and objectives for my students to work towards. Every student learns differently this means that the content in a lesson may need to be delivered in a different way or format to meet the individual student’s needs. Considering what might have to change and accommodations that a student may need ahead of time will be extremely beneficial.

I am focusing on comprehensible input because without full comprehension, especially for English Learners, they will continue to struggle and fall behind throughout their education. Learning language should come naturally to people, and by giving students an accurate comprehensible input, this will help students become successful. I will especially focus on my speaking pace and tone as well as learning how my students are best taught by giving them comprehension checks.

Without a clear understanding of what they are supposed or expected to do, students, both native speakers and English learners, will be lost. This will allow your students to have a same basic understanding of a topic so that you can move on to harder, more challenging topic. Your entire classroom will have common ground and this ultimately make your classroom a better learn environment.

For the remainder of the course, I've decided to focus on the SIOP component of Building Background. As we have learned, this feature is so vital to most of the other components of SIOP, and I think it is an important piece to focus on. In my reflection, I wrote about how using what students already know can help them comprehend new content a lot more easily. Learners also remember content to which they can make connections, which is why I feel that building background and expanding schemata is so important.

While creating new background and connecting to what students already know is a great classroom strategy, it's important for us to remember that not all students have the same background knowledge, and that can put some students (generally, ELs) at a disadvantage.

Focusing on interaction... I find it important for students to build interaction skills with their peers and their teachers. Having interaction in the classroom is my priority because I want students to make friends and feel comfortable in a school setting as well as out of school settings. I want students to be comfortable to ask questions and think critically about what they are learning. Building the interactions between children and their peers can leave a lasting impact on how they communicate with others in the real world.

I am planning on focusing more on building background. Particularly because a large part of being successful in teaching ESL students is knowing what educational background they have and what background knowledge they bring to the American educational experience. I plan to focus more on this particular category because I think it is an extremely important module to learning as a whole. Particularly because knowledge should be scaffold-ed. How can you build on previous knowledge if you do not know what previous knowledge your students have.

I feel it is important for everyone to interact in order to make those social connections. interaction is key any language and to almost every subject.

Something that is necessary for any good lesson or classroom dynamic. Something SIOP emphasizes is that discussions with peers provide practice in the target language. In a large group setting students will be hard to create as many opportunities to practice. Yet when spilt into groups students will be able to practice with an increase in time when having a conversation. As teachers, we are encouraged to allow English learners to provide daily opportunities to about content in pairs and small group. While allowing those opportunities, it creates chances to assess a student’s knowledge. As teachers, we should be encouraging more student interaction so that it can all deeper understanding of the text, improves oral development, stimulate the brain, increase motivation, allow more time to process to learn and increase their attention.
