I am appreciative of the fact that our TK World of Wonders books depict a culturally diverse population. I will be seeking new supplemental books and activities to expose my students to other cultures. Being the parent of two internationally adopted children, I have been keenly aware of the dangers of stereotyping, and I am appreciative of today's PD topic.

It really made you think or rethink from another person's perspective, and how important it is to not just tell a "single story". Children are impressionable, and so it is critical not to share just a "single story": "showing a people as one thing over and over... and that is what they become". Single story: "...creates stereotypes." "...emphasizes how we are different." We need to focus on positives and not just negatives as we teach our children.

As she said, it's not the story that is necessarily wrong, but it is incomplete, and if it is incomplete, that does not tell the whole story. It is all to easy to fall into what might be considered a "single story" when looking at a child, coworker, or parent. One quote that caught me was "show a people one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become." We must be careful not to do this in our own classrooms.

I believe that when we see groups of students as "the same," we miss out on the individual greatness that our students have. One of the reasons I choose not to look at CUM files right away is because I want the student to write their story first; I want to see what they have to share before I look at someone else's thoughts about them.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy means that we ALL matter- each experience is meant to be shared valued, supported, and seen. Being vulnerable to share experience is a strength. It reminds me of the fact that as educators it is our responsibility to not just present "a single story" about history, social issues or really anything. Oftentimes I think we are scared to "rock the boat" by presenting different perspectives. This does not have to be controversial. We should be able to present mutliple stories on a subject and challenge students to think critically.

It allows for the student who does not see their culture represented often a feeling of inclusion, and it also allows students an opportunity to learn about diversity within other nationalities and the cultures found around the world. Allowing for an opportunity to compare and contrast also shows connections across cultures that can build bridges.

A basic premise of culturally relevant pedagogy is that instead of having students adapt to how "school" sends messages, our schools need to "adapt our sending mechanisms".

It would be impossible for us to design culturally relevant lessons without really learning the cultures of our students. So the first task as teachers is we need to have students engage their own identities and cultures (it's important to note that there are multiple cultures that shape our identities as individuals). From there, our class community can learn one another. Furthermore, I as their teacher can design lessons more appropriately and adapt my "sending mechanisms".

Are we doing this as teachers? Are we doing this as a district? Are our principals, psychologists, counselors, etc. doing this? How are we learning our student's cultures? And is it done with just 1-2 lessons or are we frequently and intentionally learning our students?

Are we doing this for ourselves? Do we reflect on ourselves as cultural individuals? We can't do this with students if we are not doing this ourselves.

This is so represented of the education we present to our students. We should start by asking our students their version of the story and add another unknown or true piece. We can also take it one step further in our interaction with the people we work with. We look at them as if they only have one story and do not delve into their full story which is unfortunate because knowing thier full story or just another piece can impact what we do for out students.

The realization that the texts she read influenced the writing she produced. That foreign influence directed the single story that she would embrace as the truth. "When you show a people as one thing, that is what they become." This statement was very powerful. Her shared story of the boy who worked in their home and how she saw him as nothing more than poor, was honest. The understanding that there must be a balance of stories to represent the beautiful diversity that is our world is powerful. This understanding should be entwined in our every day teaching. We should celebrate and build up, not "flatten the experience".

One thing that immediately came to mind is increasing student visibility in books. It is so empowering for students to see and read about students who look like them, or have similar stories to them.

I think it can also empower students to learn about the stories of students who have a different story. Students come to us with SO much to their stories. A single story creates a stereotype and as educators, we need to consciously check on our own biases and reflect upon how a single story can affect our interactions with our students.

It is important to reject the idea of there being a single story for our students. It is also important to remind our students of the importance of their voice to educate us on their story. Making more space and assignments around student sharing their stories will empower students and educate others. It is sad that the author was told her book was not authentic, but it emphasized that when they are telling their story we need to believe them and remove our bias of who we think they are. This reminded me that each day we meet with students we are only seeing a small part of their story and that there is so much more to them as they are growing and learning each day.

We aren't defined by one story or one person's perception of one story. It's important to carry this thought process into our classrooms when working with our students. They are more that just a below level reader, or great writer. We need to discover the different facets that make them who they are.
