For the bulk of Americans, voting is an action that immediately comes to mind when we talk about citizenship. To me, the pillar Citizenship signifies citizens actively and positively engaging with their given country, whether that entails lobbying for a law in front of Congress or helping hand out food at your local food drive. The creation of this art was sponsored by Ocean Sole, an organization created in 1983 that aims to address the problem of debris and its effects on wildlife in Kenya. 
The creation of these giraffes functions as both a social commentary and a way to bring attention to a serious problem. When we discuss community service learning, I envision that it entails addressing a problem in your community--whether that is defined as your neighborhood, city, state, country, etc.--and actively working to solve it. Ocean Sole recognized that the amount of debris washed up on the Kenyan coast was a danger to the natural wildlife. The Ocean Sole project was created as a solution for the existing trash, but also helps generate income for low-income Kenyan families that work on the project--the pictured giraffes are just one example of subjects in the artwork they create. The vaccine worked by inoculating patients with cowpox to protect against the much more serious smallpox. 
I believe that the most important part of community building is working across differences to achieve a mutually beneficial goal. In the case of the smallpox vaccine, while being heralded as widely effective, Schools of Medicine and Boards of Health refused to accept its validity, because of it's bovine origins. in 1809, Milton, a small town in Massachusetts, held a public demonstration to show the effectiveness of the vaccine; this follows a campaign in which three-hundred residents consented to be vaccinated. Each person was issued a certificate, as proof of vaccination, which, a year later, was used as evidence to pass a law to allow Dr. Jenner's vaccine to be used freely. In this case, the town residents worked together, against their opposition, to allow the smallpox vaccination to be used--something that was extremely crucial in the gradual process of eradicating smallpox.

One of the key aspects of Scholarship is understanding how multiculturalism ties into social issues. In the case of "Wuthering Heights", I want to focus on the actress Merle Oberon, who hid her true ancestry until a year before she passed. Born in 1911, Oberon was born under the British Raj in Mumbai, India, where the British class system governed. This class system was intolerant of people of mixed race, and Oberon, an Anglo-Indian, was given the blessing of fair skin, which allowed her to conceal her true heritage. Conforming into society's "perfect" upper class English woman, Oberon managed to enter the film industry, but left behind her Indian heritage, due to her fear that discrimination would ruin her cinematic career. The pillar of leadership is all about understanding and using your position as a leader to enact positive and effective change. Grace Abbott was at the center of all advocacy done for her chosen career path. She lived in Hull House, served on many national committees and organizations that worked for advancing child welfare, co-founded the Joint Committee for Vocational Training (est. 1911), worked to draft a constitutional amendment against child labor, and served as the director for the child labor division in the U.S. Children's Bureau from 1921-1934. Most notably, Abbott helped draft the Social Security act from 1934-1939, and was the first woman to be nominated for a Presidential cabinet position, although she sadly wasn't confirmed. With every leadership opportunity presented to her, Grace Abbott took advantage of the power granted, to do the maximum positive change she could.
