Patience - Community schools is a life style change not a fad

Went on a bike tour and learned about their bike program. It seemed fun and doable, but we just need the people in our community who are passionate about that to get it started.

We're already doing a lot of good work. Some of what people spoke to are things we're already doing- school psychologists and social workers on site, for example.

The lack of family/parent/community engagement is an issue at all schools, but the more you implement the community school process the more engagement you will get.

Few descriptions/examples I liked were: Involvement= transactional (Parent teacher conference), Engagement=relational (outside the class/classroom events)

Program=specific implementation of academics by parent

Practice= Apply learnings/ resources learned from a program

Engagement Action/solutions: 1a.EL Families Yearly meet/greet Key Staff (Principal/VP) where translators walk with and teach parents about the school. Then they follow attendance throughout the year. (4k parents/staff) 1b. Each class represents a country throughout the year and puts together a presentation/booth at the yearly multicultural festival.

1c. Academic Parent Teacher Teams (APPT) Parent/teacher conference with individual support for coaching and training. (DCHS/ EL families)

1d. Get staff buy-in to build around families schedules.

1e. Teach strategies from classroom-home learning activities EX. Dibels Fluency reading
