The family also went on lots of cross-country trips. One time they went to Iron Mountain in Michigan, where Billie’s family was from. Her dad, Loren, didn’t really fit in. He was a truck driver, woodsman, and poet. He would raise wild animals as his own. Also, because he was never really successful, he would have to support his family by hunting, but he would cry over every deer he shot. Chris and Loren became very close. Walt took Chris on his first backpacking trip at 8 and did that climb every year thereafter. A little later, Walt took all of his boys from both marriages to climb Longs Peak. At 13,000 feet, Walt couldn’t make the top, but Chris kept wanting to go on at 12. Chris was also really good academically. He usually scored A’s. One time he had an F, both Chris and Carine were also musical. Chris played piano, guitar, and French Horn, but quit once his sister got the first chair in horn. He was very protective of Carine and would always hold her hand in the street. When he was 12, they bought Carine a dog named Buckley, but soon after Chris and Buckley were always together and Chris would take him on runs. With sports, he had a lot of talent but didn’t focus on the finer things. He wound up becoming a major cross country runner and even captain of the high school team. He would make up grueling training sessions for the cross country members. Carine is like 5’8”, about the same as Chris, and they look so much alike that people think they were twins. She has the same energy as Chris. Chris would make fun of her for working so much. 10 months after Chris was discovered, Carine still can’t get through a day without crying. She says that the hardest part is the 20-minute drive to work. In September 1992, her husband Chris Fish came home early from their business. I now walk into the wild.” Because of this, many people think that he was suicidal and never attended to come out. Krakauer thinks that his death was unplanned, based on how McCandless was with others before his adventure and from Krakauer’s own personal experience. Krakauer admits to growing up moody and having father issues. Krakauer spent most of his youth climbing various mountains in Alaska and Canada. In 1977, he decided to climb a peak known as the Devil’s Thumb. He was 23 and no one had ever climbed it’s north wall. He was a carpenter, and one day told his boss he was quitting and that same day he left for Alaska. The Devils’ Thumb is outside a village called Petersburg on the Alaska Canada border. You can only get there by boat or plane. He couldn’t afford a plane, so he abandoned his car and hitched a ride on a salmon boat. One night as he was steering the boat, he saw a mule deer in the middle of the Fitz High Sound, just swimming in the middle of the night. He started smoking it in the tent, which in turn made him hungry. He started making oatmeal, lit the stove to melt the snow and then smelt something burning. To make things worse, he burned his hand when trying to put out the flames. The tent wasn’t his, he borrowed it from his father. Krakauer’s father had quite a temper and lots of expectations for his son. He wanted him to be a doctor or at least a lawyer. He also taught Krakauer how to climb. When Krakauer was a teen, he started to rebel. Instead of being a doctor, he became a carpenter. He was able to hitchhike to Laird River Hot springs, but at that point it was hard to get a ride. He met a man named Gaylord Stuckey. Stuckey was delivering an RV to Fairbanks, right where McCandless was going. Stuckey however wasn’t allowed to give hitchhikers a ride. After talking to McCandless, he decided to take him halfway, then wound up taking him all the way to Fairbanks. It was a three day drive. They wound up talking a lot. Stuckey found out that McCandless had issues with his family, that his dad was a bigot, and that McCandless was planning on staying out in the wild for the summer. They got to Fairbanks on April 25. Stuckey bought McCandless a bag of rice. McCandless wanted to get books on the local plants, but Stuckey told him he’s still too early, the snow was still a foot or two on the ground. Stuckey dropped McCandless off at the university at 5:30 PM. When he left, Stuckey told him, “Alex, I’ve driven you a thousand miles. I’ve fed you and I’ve fed for three straight days. At the stampede trail, you can’t see the station. Krakauer is with three others and they make their way through the forest to the station. There are two towers on each side, and a cable connecting. On the cable, there is a basket that surveyors would sit in and pull themselves across the river. Unfortunately, the basket is on the other side, kept hidden so that people wouldn’t cross and hunt on the other side of the river. Little did McCandless know that a half mile downstream there was a basket that could have taken him to safety. McCandless wanted to wander uncharted territory, but even in Alaska, there are no more unknowns. So McCandless’ version of that was to not have a proper map. Krakauer wants to get to the bus so that he can better understand why, even though it was better to go back to the bus, did McCandless stay there so long into August when the waters would have lowered.
Krakauer gets across the wire using climbing gear, then gets the basket and ferries the other three across. They then make their way back to the Stampede trail. The trail is very overgrown because no one ever travels it on that side of the river, the there are beaver ponds everywhere. There are also bear tracks and on each side of the trail 15 foot alders. He went back to hunting and gathering, and read several books. It rained for a week straight. He hunted 35 squirrels, 4 geese, five jays, woodpeckers, and two frogs. He also ate tons of plants. Unfortunately, the meat he was eating was lean, and he was burning way more calories than he was eating. In late July, he made a mistake that really hurt him. He had just finished reading Dr. Zhivago, and wrote a bunch of notes. In one section, it reads: "unshared happiness is not happiness” McCandless wrote next to it “HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED.” Dr. Zhivago was the last book he read. Two days after he finished the book, on July 30, his journal reads: “EXTREMELY WEAK, FAULT OF POT. SEED. MUCH TROUBLE TO STAND UP. STARVING GREAT JEOPARDY.” By August 19, he was dead. Wayne Westerberg remembered McCandless buying potatoe seed to plant a garden. One theory is that he never planted the garden and wound up eating the seeds once he was hungry. However, he would have had to eat pounds of seeds in a short time period to have become sick off of them. The size of his backpack that Gallien saw was no way large enough to carry enough seeds to get poisoned over. What is more likely, however, was that, in the book he got at the university, it talks about the wild potatoe that grows in the area. This potatoe is edible in spring and summer. As the weather warmed, he dug up and ate a lot of this potatoe and by July he was even eating the seeds from the seed pod. The flowers of the potatoe plant look a lot like the flowers of the sweet pea plant. The only difference is the veins in the leaves. The sweet pea plant, according to natives, is toxic. It took the scientist about 21 years to find out the cause of his death, the results showed that the seeds had a lethal concentration of a compound called beta-ODAP(7) that has caused gradual weakening and paralysis in famine victims relying on a certain pea(7). Plenty of legumes stores this toxin in their seeds to ward (10) off predators. The compound is a similar essential amino acid, arginine, and it tricks the body's cells into thinking it's good for them and then it wreaks havoc, says Krakauer. It screws up your ability to metabolize, so you essentially starve. He lived a different life and that's what annoys people. Yes, he was vastly under-prepared by failing to take the essential items, but he was mentally strong and determined. You have to applaud him for lasting nearly 4 months without the proper gear. That's incredible. He did something that scares a lot of people like he shirked the security and comfort we find in a 9-5 daily grind paying bills and living at the mercy of corporations. I do some what admire him. He is portrayed as a lunatic because he went against the grain of what society wants us to do. However, I'm a realist. In order to attempt and uphold this lifestyle, you need experience, the right equipment. However, he had the right attitude! And that's the inspiration for me. But I also feel that he was really selfish, there was people that actually care about him and loved him but he didn't really care at all, and that's what upsets me the most and I feel that most of the people that read the book feel like this too. But he definitely   inspired me to not challenge raw nature without the knowledge and training even though. He DID have knowledge and training. He also thought the seeds were edible because of a book he read with them in it. The book was old, inaccurate too and just not up to date.
