Giovanni was born in 1485 in Val di Greve, Republic of Florence and died in 1528. Before serving the King of France and becoming a explorer, Verrazzano was a pirate. He spent part of his life stealing and selling goods before starting his voyages. He explored the Atlantic coast of North America from 1524-1525 and was sent by King Francis I of France to explore the East coast of North America for a route to the Pacific Ocean. Though one of the main purpose of his personal goals was to seek a passage to Asia. Instead, he founded The New York Harbor, Block Island, and The Narragansett Bay. His discoveries greatly helped shaped the construction and look of maps that would be used by explorers who came after him. His voyages and exploration were soon ended when some of his crew men and himself were eaten by cannibals.
