-Make you think about the current state of the world. Media being banned is not a foreign concept in the US, and one single event could lead to the events of the book. In one scene, when Bird is using a school computer, he gets curious and begins to research about his mother. "Finally, when he is too tired to resist, he pecks out one more search, one he has never dared to try before. Margaret Miu. There's a pause, then an error message pops up. No results, it says.... Our missing hearts, he types, and the page stills for a moment. No results. This time, no matter how many times he clicks, it won't reset." (35)
-Explore different or contrasting possibilities for the world/future. The crisis, or an economic collapse of that scale, is very possible in the future, and was likely inspired by past events in US history. For example in Our Missing Hearts, we can see actions during the protests, "Evictions and protests daily, then nightly, people clamoring for assistance, for any kind of aid. In Our Missing Hearts the crisis and PACT is something that could happen in the future of the U.S and the dystopia of the setting isn't something too far off from real life. It also allows readers to think about their present society and what factors and impacts now could affect their future. Another example from Our Missing Hearts is the racism and prejudice that happens in America now. The discrimination towards asian people in the novel like when the old asian man walked into the open pizza shop, but the cashier said "You don't understand English?" and "There's a Chinese restaurant over on Mass Ave. Go get yourself some fried rice and spring rolls, if you're hungry. We're closed". Our Missing Hearts describes racially motivated hate crimes and the attitudes that people who are unaffected have. The hate crimes described in the book are a reflection of the real world and the impact that bystanders have in society. Readers are also able to see where the world may be headed both in communal values and governmental structures. PACT is an example of the power that the government holds and their ability to dictate our lives.

Speculative fiction also mirrors individual values and cultivates reflection. In the novel, no one speaks out against PACT or intervenes when they witness a violent hate crime. This is a representation of self preservation and being a bystander. Also allows readers view different forms of resistance in a fictional setting. Connection to the book - when Margaret's poem became a message of resistance to bring awareness to the many children stripped from their families. - "PACT is not about race, the president was always saying, it is about patriotism and mindset" (9)
This felt similar to America right now because often the government will make laws that negatively affect marginalized communities, but they'll skirt around the real reason why they make the laws (racism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, etc). In addition, the government will pass laws that — while not directly targeting people of color — still disproportionately affect them.
2. Speculative Fiction is useful for encouraging people to make change. 
- "These steely New Yorkers — people who could ignore a troupe of break dancers spinning around subway poles, who could serve around a swarm of camera-toting tourists or a man dressed a giant hot dog without losing speed (...) they paused, listening, and the teeming rivers of the city's streets thickened and fogged."(295)
- The quote is referencing when Margaret started telling the stories of the children taken by PACT. It caused the normally apathetic New Yorkers to pause and take note of what was happening. Margaret did not have to put herself at risk by protesting against PACT but she chooses to do so and is making a difference and creating change. This sends the message to readers that anyone can make change.
3. Speculative Fiction is useful for having hope for our world's future.
- On pg. 322, the narrator states that "they can keep collecting stories, finding ways to share them. Finding ways to pass them on and remember them."
- Speculative fiction gives readers hope and inspiration for what they can implement into their lives to create change.
