The setting is a small upstate town in New York  in the year of 1936. The book takes place during the Great Depression.

What does the setting look like, sound like, feel like

The setting looks like a normal/casual small town in upstate New York, and overall the town has a very large population of African Americans. The small town sounds like all of the people in the community get a long with each other and there seems to be no arguments or disputes. Finally, the setting feels like the community is a very tight family because the community has a very good relationship with one another. Also, the community seems to notice when there is a person who is different from one of them so in a way the community sends off the feeling of being judgmental.

What are some similarities and difference time period to america 

A similarity between the setting of the book and the time period now is that in both cases there is some sourt of racism that is shown. In both the book and in America now people are being treated differently just based on the color of their skin. This book takes place during the time of the Great Depression and the Great Depression was a real event that occurred in Americas history.

Reaction: About the Car crash.
Otis and his family are driving to church when he is involved in a car crash. His car was hit by a hay truck. The hay trucks hits their car in the back and flips the car over. This was a moment that caught me off guard because when you think of a family going to church you think happy thoughts and as the reader you would never expect something bad to happen. Otis and his family were off to church one moment and in the next moment they were surrounded by fire. Also, this part of the book made me feel really sad because I felt bad for Otis. Reaction: About Willie and and abusive dad. 
Willie's father is abusive to him and his mother. I feel bad for Willie because his father is not a good guy. For example, whenever Willie's father comes home he is drunk or just angry. No kid should have to deal with this type of situation. Overall, when I read this part of the novel I automatically become angry at Willie's father. I wish that his father would just stop hurting him as well as his mother. For instance, one thing that Willie's father did that made me really upset was when Willie's father burned Willie's hand. Willie was just trying stop his father from hurting his mother. First of all, no kid should have to force one of his parents to stop hurting the other one, and no child should be hurt by their own parent. Parents are suppose to love and care for their children, but this is not the case with Willie's father. Reaction: About the church in the town. 
Overall, the community is made up of mostly African American people. Therefore, it was surprising to the people in the community when the white women came into the church. Also, it was surprising to the community when the same lady asked if she could be baptized. This scene in the book made me kind of confused because when the white lady walked into the church the rest of the people where very surprised to see her. I would never think of it to be surprising to see someone of a different color skin in church. Additionally, I was happy for the women because she was able to ask if she could be baptized. This must have taken a lot of strength from her part because she knew that the others in the church must of thought that she was kind of weird.

Reaction about: How Otis feels about Hibernia.
In the chapter Daffodils, Otis sends a gum wrapper necklace to Hibernia. I was surprised that Otis could such a thing. I do not think I could ever send a girl something because I would be to embarrassed. It was surprising when Hibernia met Otis for the first time after he sent the necklace. Otis was so nervous that he could not even speak to her. His tongue was tied in a knot. Otis had to have one of his friends, Willie, speak for him. Hibernia said that the necklace was beautiful. If I was put into this situation I think that I would have acted like Otis did. I do not think that I would have been able to speak to the girl. Reaction: What Hibernia's dad said about Hibernia's singing voice. 
In the chapter Teen Dreams, Hibernia is going to tryout for the position to sing for Joe Louis. If she gets the chance to sing she will have the chance to raise money for him so he can go to a special match. I was surprised when Hibernia's dad said that it was ok for her to tryout. Hibernia always says that her Dad loves her singing but I would have never thought that her dad would let her audition for something that had to deal with boxing. Her dad doesn't really seem like a person who cares about sports. I was very surprised when he said that she could audition to sing at this event, because he is a man of peace. Reaction: How mean the bleach man is to the kids at the orphanage. 
In the chapter Egg Tree, the bleach man is yelling at one of the counselors to get down from a tree. The counselor wanted to do an egg tree for Easter in order to brighten the spirits of the kids. I was surprised that the bleach man was so angry the counselor is just trying to make the kids happy for ester that is coming up. Reaction: About when Willie saw his Mom

This is when Willie, Lilly, and Otis were walking over to the church to listen to the radio. Then Willie sees her mom in her fighting skirt in a crowd but he does not think that it is her until he sees her face poke out of the crowd. This was a surprising and happy moment because Willie and his mother have not seen each other for a long time. This moment was a very happy moment for me because I loved that Willie and his mom reconnected with one another. I know that if I had to stay away from my mom for a long time and not know when I would see her again I would be very nervous and upset. I would not ever want to be in the same position Willie was in. Reaction:When all of them got together 

Once Willie and his Mom talked they went into the church. In the church,  Hibernia and her Dad are sitting down listening to Joes fight on the radio. Overall, this was a nice part of the book because it was one of the first times that these people sat down together to support Joe. I would never think that a boxing fight/match could play a big part in a book. I would have guessed that a boxing match would have been a minor event, but in this case the boxing match was an important section. When Joe won the fight everyone was screaming because of how happy they were. Reaction:Willie finds a cat and names him bird

When Willie was sleeping he felt a tug on his Christopher Columbus  keychain. He woke up and saw that a stray cat has scratched it up. He plays with the cat and he names the cat bird.I was surprised that Willie kept the cat. There are no pets allowed in the orphanage, so i was surprised that Willie was taking the chance to be caught. I do not think that this was the best idea. Also, I do not think that he should have kept the cat. If someone found out that Willie was taking care of a stray cat Willie could get into a lot of trouble for that. If i was in the same situation Willie was in of I might or might not have taken care of the cat. Reaction:Mr.sneed takes away the philco that otis and willie were listening to.
This surprised me because   most of the time when you are caught doing something you are not supposed to do. You get off with a warning but Mr.Sneed just took the radio without saying a thing. Another thing that surprised me was what otis and willie did to get back at the bleach man. While the bleach man was taking a shower they took his towel and opened all of the windows so that they he will be freezing to go outside when he gets out of the shower. Reaction:The brown bombers campaign.
When the brown bomber needs money to go to his next fight they hold a "fundraiser" to get the money by having the all of the girls go up and sing while people are putting money in the boxes while they are singing. This was surprising moment because it brought Hibernia's relationship with her dad closer together. While Hibernia was singing a girl stole her song but then they sang it together. Reaction:Mr:Sneed and Mrs:Weiss's argument.
It is around halloween time when Lila is getting yelled at by the bleach man. The bleach man is saying that they should not have any fun and should all do your chores. While Lila is saying that they should have fun especially around halloween by carving pumpkins and making costumes. This is surprising because I would think if you are in charge of an orphanage then You want to make it a fun experience for the kids that you have to take care of. Willie is a very strong person. Also, Willie is a very caring character. He shows this by the way he treats his mom. 

Some of the secondary characters are Willies Mom and Lila. They are important to the story because Willie mom is what keeps him going throughout the whole story and Lila is taking care of him when Willie was at the orphanage. 

The problem is that his "Dad" burned his hand and his Mom sent him away for protection. Willie can not return to his mom because of what his dad might to do him. 

He is trying to live by him self at the orphanage by making friends and  having fun but he still thinks about his Mom all the time.

I like the book because it has everything from mystery to action and much more. Overall, I really like the characters because they act like real people and they act realistic.

Sometimes the book can get boring. For example, when the characters are just talking to each other the book and no main/big events happen the book is quite boring.

The main characters are Peter and Pax. Peter is a boy that had to move because of a war that was coming straight into his neighborhood. While his Dad goes to fight the war, Peter has to live with his grandpa. Pax is a fox that Peter loved and took care of ever since Pax was a kit.I would describe both of them as loving, caring and smart.
2. Who are some secondary characters and why are they important to the story?
One secondary character is old lady at the barn. She is important because when Peter broke his leg she was there to care for him. She gave him advice that he would need and use throughout his adventure.
3. What is the problem or conflict of the book?
Peter's Dad is off to war and Peter has had to leave Pax behind. Peter sets out on an adventure to find Pax while Pax is going through an adventure too.
4. How is the main character trying to resolve the problem?
The main character is trying to resolve the problem by going off to find his beloved pet fox, Pax.
5. What do you like so far about the book? AND WHY.
I like how Peter never gives up trying to find Pax. He just keeps going even when he breaks his leg.

Warrant:  Throughout all of the things that Ender is being put through he remains strong even though he misses Earth and his family. While he is put to the test, he is singled out as the best recruit because the commander in control said he was the best out of everyone in the shuttle that they were in. While Ender is a natural born leader, he needs to earn that role so that he can get the respect of his fellow soldiers and friends. While he works to gain this respect, he needs to stay strong and not show that he is sad or all the things that he worked for to become a leader will be lost.
