Initially before the course started, i had preconceived opinions on what content the course would cover - mainly being how crime was dealt with in different parts of the world.

To my surprise however, it actually went much deeper into criminological theories that helped me to understand how root believes and ideas evolved and modernised over time to keep up with society.

Punishment is more than just reforming the offender’s behavior (E.g it can be a moral education to the public too by teaching them how does punish affect and letting them being aware of punishments and consequences)
Punishment could be used for labor market just for the profit of the government not just incapacitations ( E.g galley slavery , forced transportation labor and modern hse of corrections)

I used to be easily swayed by netizens' remarks on crime-related posts. After attending this course, I learn to think about the purpose of punishments and understand how it affects society as a whole and logically. Overall, this module gave me a better insight on the different types of punishment, how and where they should be applied as well as societal views of stigma that tend to hinder judgments.

The many different layers of punishments and logical reasonings behind it (punishments having more than just the effect of retribution, the considerations needed to punish someone, theories associated with punishments)
The difficulty in achieving fairness and justice in a country and how there are many things and aspects to consider from (from public perception, effect on the country/family etc)

CJS is quite fair that they consider intention behind the crime, etc they give lower sentencing if the offender don't truly unds the gravity of their crime, but can also backfire when some ppl "accidentally" kill a person after years of abuse.

Crime don’t always have to lead to traditional punishments, punishments don’t always mean that justice is served, and having a fair justice system don’t necessarily lower or remove crime.

I used to naively think the relationship between the 3 were straightforward but this course has broaden my horizon. Nowadays I look at everyday objects and systems and find myself pondering about the concepts I learnt in this course. From simple streetlights to deliberate signs at the Singapore customs (Plain clothes police on patrol), most things contribute to heightened safety and security.

Through this, I realised that in the past the various classes, e.g the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, led to capitalisation.

And I also did not know that there would be so many different kind of theories and concepts when it comes to crime, justice and punishment. It sort of opened my perspective and knowledge on this.

The class helped me better understand the module, and it made me enjoy exploring the different kinds of topics during each seminar.

Every offender has a different motivation for committing crime. Therefore, we should view this issue from a multifaceted lens and not from a one dimensional one
I learnt that the daily interactions with people can also lead to the perpetuation of stigma. Therefore, it shows that there is a societal onus to rehabilitate offenders and not just the justice system.
