R&J's
Love is instant they do not hesitate, instead dive straight into love. Rome call
Juliet the sun while Juliet tells us how she can’t wait to kiss Romeo. This show
their love is instant and there is no room for hate, instead they would change their
name or even die for each other. “trespass sweetly urged”. In contrast to
R&J’s love in The Great Expectation Estella and pip are less than warm
towards each other. The first word she say’s is 'Boy' highlighting her first impression towards Pip
and the fact she see herself to be of a higher social class even though they
are only children and class should not be of any importance. Pip does fine Estella
to be attractive and say ‘I think she is very Pretty’, Pip does like Estella
but the feeling is mutual from Estella she does not want to be associated with
him.

Pip was invited by Miss Havisham to meet Estella, as Miss Havisham wanted them to get on so that Estella could break his heart. It was always intended that Pip would fall for Estella, so that she could carry out Miss Havisham's plan. However, Estella doesn't love him back at the start, as she sees him as a 'common labouring-boy', whose lower class makes him undesirable.

In Romeo & Juliet, Romeo met Juliet due to his trespassing at the Capulet party; they were not meant to meet, and due to the family feud, they were not meant to get along, but they fell for each other at first sight.

The first encounter of Romeo and Juliet is in many ways the exact opposite to that of the encounter in Great Expectations.

Romeo meets Juliet simply by chance - originally he goes to the party to see Rosaline. This is the exact opposite to what happens in Great Expectations, where Pip is 'invited' (commanded) by Miss Havisham to meet Estella.

Another difference is that in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet loves Romeo back and it is Juliets parrents and family that hate Romeo, but in Great Expectations Miss Havisham (all that Estella has of a Family) is nice to Pip while Estella is horrible

Miss Havisham and Pips family had arranged for Pip to go to Satis House so she can teach estella to break hearts. Pip falls in love with Estella, but she doesnt love him back, in fact estella is disgusted by pip as he is of working class "what coarse hands he has! And what thick boots". she also doesn't refer to him as pip, she calls him "Boy".

Whereas Romeo and juliet were never supposed to meet and the both love eachother, they are of similar class and wealth. it was pretty much love at first sight in Romeo and Juliet, but also for Pip in Great Expectations.

Love at first sight occurs both in Romeo & Juliet and in Great Expectations, but not in the same way.

In Romeo & Juliet both lovers love each other at first sight; "Two blushing pilgrims" shows that they both love each other and the religious imagery, "Pilgrims", demonstrates the depth of their love.

In Great Expectations their love is also 'Love at first sight' but is very one-sided; Pip loves Estella, "I think she is very pretty", but Estella does, by no means, love him back, "Boy" & "Coarse little monster".
