Spanish-American War

Summary:
Cuba was a Spanish colony that wanted to gain independence from Spain. Naturally, the United States supported them in this endeavor. It helped that the United States had personal interests in Cuba, such as their sugarcane. Yellow journalism was the main factor that fired up Americans. The war didn’t start, though, until after the U.S.S Maine was supposedly bombed by Spain. The first thing the U.S did was take over the Philippines, who also wanted independence from Spain. Then, they took it to the Caribbean. On July 3, the U.S took over Santiago. On December 10, 1898, Spain and the U.S agree on a treaty in Paris.
Main argument:
We believe that the United States was more of a bully than a world leader, in this instance. We believe that they were being greedy and hypocrites. An example of the U.S being greedy was when they took over the Philippines. They didn’t need to do that. The main purpose of the war was to free Cuba and to get back at Spain for supposedly bombing the U.S.S Maine. They were also being greedy with the war. After the U.S.S Maine was bombed, Spain didn’t want the finger to be pointing at them so they actually agreed to almost everything the U.S demanded. The U.S just had to get revenge on Spain. The U.S should’ve kept a clear head and agreed with Spain.
The United States was being hypocrites when they were promising Cuba and the Philippines independence, when they just wanted to have control of them for themselves. In the treaty Spain and the U.S agreed upon, the U.S bought the Philippines for $20 million. This raised arguments among the American people. President McKinley justified this action by saying, “that there was nothing left for us to do but take them all [the Philippine Islands], and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and Christianity them.” He said this when most Filipinos have been Christian for centuries. They should’ve just left the Philippines alone after they helped them get independence.
Opposing points:
With all that said, the U.S did achieve the goal of getting Cuba and the Philippines out from under Spain’s rule. When the U.S went to the Philippines in the beginning of the war, the Filipinos actually supported the U.S troops and joined them. The U.S also stopped the concentration camps, where Spain put the entire rural population of central and western Cuba. Although the United States did achieve its goal, they could’ve gone about it a whole different way. They could’ve had a civil conversation with Spain after the U.S.S Maine attack instead of going straight into war.

Roosevelt Corollary
facts - The Roosevelt Corollary was a section added to the Monroe Doctrine in order to keep peace in central and south America. In the late 19th century, many Latin American countries borrowed huge amounts of $ from European banks to further develop their countries. Roosevelt feared that if these countries didn’t properly pay back their loans, European countries would intervene. Roosevelt reminded these countries of the Monroe Doctrine and added the Roosevelt Corollary as a way to prevent the European countries from attacking Latin American countries.
supporting argument - We feel America was acting as a world leader in the case of the Roosevelt Corollary because they were trying to keep peace between the European countries and the Latin American countries. America was acting as a world leader by also establishing themselves as the country helping the central American countries out as they felt they had the moral responsibility to help out other countries.

Dollar Diplomacy

facts - One way the U.S used dollar diplomacy was during the 1911 rebellion in Nicaragua. Nicaragua was left bankrupt after this rebellion. U.S president, William H. Taft, had American banks loan money to Nicaragua to pay their debts.

Wilson’s Missionary diplomacy was the idea that it was the U.S. moral responsibility to deny recognition to any Latin American government that was viewed as hostile to American interests.
The Roosevelt corollary stated that the United States would intervene as a last resort to ensure that other nations in the western hemisphere fulfilled their obligations to international creditors and did not pose as a threat to them. The United States increasingly used military force to restore internal stability to nations in the region.
The Dollar Diplomacy performed by William Taft used economic diplomatic and military power to open up foreign markets. In the far east it alienated Japan in Russia and created a deep suspicion among the other powers hostile to American motives.
They are all similar because they were meant to keep things going well in Latin America, but the only reason these happened was to benefit the U.S. and the U.S. only.

Such a canal could produce reduce travel times, because it would act as a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific ocean. Engineers identified two possible routes: Nicaragua and Panama.

Previously, a French company had tried and failed to build a canal cutting across a Panama. In response, Roosevelt gave a tacit approval to a rebellion by Panamanian nationalist. Nearly a dozen U.S. were ships were present as Panama declared it’s independence. 15 days later, Panama on the U.S. signed a treaty which the U.S. agreed to pay Panama $10 million plus an annual rent of $250,000 for Canal Zone, an area of land across Panama. American missionary’s and planters brought big changes in Hawaiian political, cultural, economic, and religious life. They established a constitutional monarchy in 1840. The strategic use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor during the war convinced congress to approve the annexation of Hawaii as the 50th state.
The U.S acted as a “bully” in the annexation of Hawaii through several ways. The Americans overthrew the queen to establish a new government under Dole’s control.” On the Hawaiian Islands, a group of American sugar planters under Stanford Ballard Dole overthrow Queen Liliuokalani, the Hawaiian monarch, and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president “(history.com). Another way the U.S. bullied the annexation of Hawaii was by using the sugar plantations for the U..S benefit. The United States government provided generous terms to Hawaiian sugar growers, and after the civil war, profits began to swell “( ushistory.org 2). This political cartoon shows that Queen Lili’uokalani is offering this pawn man her crown. He doesn’t accept it suggesting that her crown is meaningless since she is removed from the power. Since the Americans overthrew the Queen. Although the U.S acted as a “bully” in the annexation of Hawaii, Cleveland thought Americans acted shamefully he tried to restore Liliuokalani to her throne.

summary:

Hawaii became a state in 1898. Congress annexed hawaii and proclaimed it an American Territory in this year. We see how these hawaiian islands have been economically important to the United states for many years. This is because of the products hawaii produces, such as sugar production. In 1898, the Spanish-American War broke out, and the strategic use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor during the war convinced Congress to approve formal annexation. Two years later, Hawaii was organized into a formal U.S. territory and in 1959 entered the United States as the 50th state.

Main Argument:

-The annexation of Hawaii proved the US to be a world leader, this is because the US saw Hawaii as an island who would bring them revenue. Hawaii had many crops that could be imported into the US and make them lots of money. The US then began to get close to Hawaiians so that they could become part of the US and the US would be able to benefit from them.

-the Hawaiian Islands had been economically important to the US for many years. Since 1790s American immigrants had stopped in on there way to china and east india. In the 1820s yankee missionaries founded christian schools and churches on the island. Because, of these reasons the Island was growing and the US wanted to be a part of the growth. They saw potential in which they wanted to be part of.

-American-owned sugar plantations accounted for about 3/4 of the islands’ wealth. These plantations were the main income for those who lived on the island. The US saw how these plantations made a lot of income for those who lived on the island, so the US wanted to be a part of this.

—the US agreed to import Hawaiian sugar duty-free in 1875. Because of this over the next 15 years, hawaiian sugar production increased nine times. This was a major source of income for the Hawaiians.

opposing points:

- the mckinney tariff of 1890 provoked a crisis by eliminating the duty free status of Hawaiian sugar that the US originally implemented.

- they were against peace and pressured Hawaii to allow the US to build a naval base in pearl harbor. (which later came to use in a battle against japan)

opinion:

- the US was trying their best to help the Hawaiians by helping themselves as well.

During the Spanish-American War, as the Cubans rebelled against Spain, America started to become interested in Cuba. As the rebellion continued, with Cuba, Spain responded by sending General Valeriano Weyler to Cuba to restore order and creating barbed-wired concentration camps, which thousands died from starvation and disease. Weyler’s actions gave Hearst and Pulitzer an opportunity to create an exaggeration on what was going on in Cuba; this is what furnished the war between America and the Spanish. Furthering their vendetta against one another, the Spanish blew up the U.S.S. Maine killing more than 260 men in Harbor of Havana. The Americans desire to intervene in Cuba grew increasingly. Then, on April 20th, the United States declared war. Unknowingly, the war developed in the Philippines and then in the Caribbean. Finally, America won victory and both the United States and Spain met in Paris to agree on a treaty; the Treaty of Paris. Spain freed Cuba, turned over the islands of Guam in the Pacific and Puerto Rico in the West Indies and sold the Philippines for $20 million to the United States. 1)As the commodore George Dewey won victory, the United States troops were allowed to land in the Philippines. Dewey had support of the Filipinos who, like the Cubans, also wanted freedom from Spain. 2)Spain responded to the Cuban rebellion by sending General Valeriano Weyler who tried to crush the rebellion by hurting the entire rule of population of Central and Western Cuba into barbed-wire concentration camps. 300,00 Cubans filled these camps, which thousand dies from hunger and disease this was used in the newspapers to grow America’s sympathy for “Cuba Libre!”
3)José Marti, a Cuban poet and journalist in exile in New York, organized a guerrilla campaign and deliberately destroyed property, especially American-owned sugar mills and plantations, to provoke U.S. intervention to help the rebels achieve Cuba Libre! Although, you may argue that the U.S. acted as a “bully” in the Spanish-American War, I believe the U.S. acted as a “world leader,” because Cuba wanted to be free from Spain and as the United States intervened it gave Cuba hope to become a free Cuba.
