While Balfour tries to depict the poor resisting against the rich, he exaggerates the power that the rich withhold by putting them on the top while the poor hold them up from the bottom.

By illuminating how the poor do all the work while the rich enjoy their riches, he magnifies the poor people's attempt of resistance by showing the man punching a hole through the floor.

This picture does a good job of avoiding the poor class while showing them in the shadows of the people they are holding up, the rich class which has all of the light shed on them, strictly due to where they fall in financial standpoints in society.

It also clarifies that the different places in which they are held in society control how they see the gala/party, the platform is the line dividing the rich and the poor, it is also shown through the way the lighting and shadows are used in this illustration.

While Balfour’s “From the Depths” painting depicts the dehumanization that comes with different class statuses in society, it oversimplifies the reality of what the “poor” do for the more wealthy. The poor does not necessarily hold the rich up they each make their own type of money.
