We study literature in order to further expand our knowledge in our language and create more knowledge for other people. We study TTTC in order to learn about our past but as well as topics of truth, changing identity, and mental health struggles. These topics could spread awareness to the readers as well as possibly relate to the reader.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We are affected by literary texts by just simply learning more about our language and its syntax as well as creating a deep connection with the author. This could spike a passion for literature and writing. I was impacted by TTTC because the mental health aspect relates to my life and it is comforting reading others stories, especially O'Brien's. 

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
Meaning is constructed by O'Brien in TTTC by including a sense of vulnerability in the text which really connects the reader to O'Brien. Meaning is negotiated in this story because he is not always telling the truth. I feel as though the book is an open interpretation to  understand what truly happened. Meaning is expressed by creating detailed imagery of the events that he endured which makes the readers feel connected to the story as well, not just O'Brien. Meaning is interpreted by O'Brien's validity of truth. The storytelling aspect is more important to O'Brien than the reality of the events. 

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The story telling style affects TTTC's meaning because it makes the whole book seem more realistic. It is almost styled as a diary in past tense which makes the meaning of the text important to the readers. It's almost as if you are reading a person's whole life which makes the reader build trust with the author as well as connect with him on an emotional level.

Chronicle of a Death Foretold connects to Columbian culture through machismo. Men would complete actions  to show to the community that they possessed a strong sense of masculine pride; machismo. Abiding by these masculine norms rather than stepping out of them creates a more destruction and evil rather than a pleasant result.

-Our society has grown and is very different from the past, the old ways of thinking don’t allow for men and women to break free of roles, but now we are able to be a little more free.

-We still have stereotypes for men and women that society has kept in place

-younger generations need to fix these stereotypes, younger generations may be more judgmental

-social media has created a divide, made the gender norms more prevalent

- Judgment of oneself has stemmed from viewing others and comparing them to oneself (social media)

Question 3: Everything was written in a whimsical tone and then an instance of horror or surprise is introduced. It almost juxtaposed the entire tone of happiness and lightness. 

Question 6: It was shocking because the shop lady watched everything happen. It was also saddening because no one cared that he died. This could also reveal parts of Santiago's character because no one liked him and this could be because of a reason that we will be introduced to in the future. The narrator paints him as a kind character however the people that know him, do not find him appealing. 

Question 2: The narrator seems credible however he also puts everything in Santiago's favor so it could be a biased story. Personally hearing the perspectives from other characters could give us insight into why Santiago is such a disliked character by some. 

Question 4: Santiago is described as more careful and rich due to the things he has inherited. He is seen as maybe more privileged than most. Also religious due to the fact that he got dressed up for the bishop. It’s almost comedic that he had all these weapons but got killed so easily with knives.

Question 1: The brothers thought it was honorable to kill Santiago however it is immoral to the readers. The perspectives are different when it comes to the readers versus the characters in the book. Honor comes up in an ironic way throughout the story.

Question 2: This is ironic because to the readers this act is immoral however to the characters, the act is okay to perform. People in the book believe that it doesn't matter if he dies however the readers believe this action is morally wrong. The sentence juxtaposes itself.

The style that Morrison uses, when it comes to shift of tones, affects the meaning by developing the plot and characters. The more that different characters get to say and show the readers, the more in depth we can learn about their story. 

Time and Space

The Fugitive Slave Act puts the story into perspective because when you educate yourself of this topic, you are able to understand the plot more. Also, when you understand the plot, you can understand why certain characters act or behave the way they do based on their surroundings.

We approach literary text from different times and cultures by relating it to our own time and culture. It is simpler to understand a text when you can relate it to your own life. It provides meaning and more understanding for you, as the reader.

2. To what extent do literary texts offer insight into another culture?

Literary texts offer insight into other cultures because authors write poetry in their own style that connects to their own culture. As someone who is not part of the authors culture, information can be spread and educated across the world and other cultures. For example, in Langston Hughes works, I had a true insight into the black community and the tragic journey they endured.

3. How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time? 

The meaning and impact of a literary text changes over time based on what has changed on the world. For example, when slavery is written about, people read it as a time from the past and we reflect from a future stance. However, when women's rights or racism is written about in the past, the world still sees it as relevant in our world. The impact of a text can be shown whether the issue is still prominent in todays society or not.
