The goal should focus on student learning, so to increase that, specific curriculum and content needs must be identified. That would then inform the teacher's instructional goal to meet those identified needs. The teacher's goal and specific needs would then inform the coaching goal. Without this progression, it could be easy to lose sight of the main objective, which is student learning and success. All parts of the goal should be focused on student learning and student work/data as a way to show growth/mastery. This ensures student learning stays the central focus and objective.

It’s critical because if those pieces don’t line up, coaching just feels random. When the coaching goal connects to the teacher’s instructional goal and the actual curriculum, the feedback feels purposeful and relevant. It keeps the focus on what students are supposed to learn and makes sure the work actually moves student growth forward instead of just adding another strategy to try.

It is critical to have a connection between the coaching goal, teacher instructional goal, and curriculum needs because the goal should be aligned with the goal that was set for the students. This goal is set around mastery of standards set forth. These standards may be addressed in the content/curriculum used by the district, the teacher instructional goal should guide students towards reaching mastery, and the coaching goal is the path the teacher will take to achieve mastery for students. All aspects of the goal should fit together like a puzzle creating one piece: student achievement.

The coaching goal has to be measurable in order to see any progress. The best way to measure the goal is making sure it is tied to the instructional and the curriculum. Creating a goal outside of the required curriculum or standards doesn't measure anything.

I loved how the video said that the coach based the instructional goal on a strength. It was an "aha!" moment for me because sometimes I think of coaching as a way for teachers to try something brand new. But this makes so much sense. If you build the coaching goal based on the strength of a teacher, they can expand on their instructional practices; not reinvent the wheel. It is hard to see progress when you are trying something new.

If these three things are not all aligned, then it's like driving a car with one or two square, instead of round, tires. We always have to keep in mind that our goals as coaches are to support those of the teacher and for the students.

The connection requires teachers to work backward, starting with student-driven learning as the goal. Instruction then serves as the best practice to reach that goal, while being driven by curriculum and standards rather than teacher preference.

The purpose of a coach should be to provide support to the teacher they are coaching. The goal of the teacher, and therefore ultimately the coach as well, is student growth and learning. When thinking of a coaching goal, we should focus our view on the main objective, so it makes sense that these three things should be aligned and connected. When we focus on our goals, we should focus on our purpose.

This connection between all these elements is critical because coaching sessions must be intentional and driven by student needs, student data and supporting the teacher to be able to create a high quality learning experiences for students. Time is always precious, specially in the public school setting so planning is also key so that time is used in a manner that allows for true growth to be seen.
