There are plenty of interesting, gross, scary and fascinating diseases out there to be encountered and explored. One of my all time weirdest was a patient with (what used to be called) multiple personality disorder. Led to some very interesting conversations!

After recently watching Royal Pains, I was introduced to Alice in Wonderland Syndrome, which is so interesting. Just like in the movie when Alice shrinks and grows, this is a condition within the brain that makes people see things in disoriented sizes and distances.

The strangest disease I have come across was from seeing a clip on Instagram from a news page. In the video they interviewed a girl who sneezes about 12,000 times a day. The video said her condition was still a medical mystery but others who have had similar sneezing attacks were diagnosed with having a tick similar to an OCD tick.

I once read about a woman who many know as “toxic lady.” Apparently, she went to the hospital to receive treatment for complications concerning her cervical cancer. However, while the nurses and doctors were helping her, they began experiencing shortness of breath, muscle spasms, and some even fainted. One person reported that her blood had a smell similar to ammonia. Unfortunately, this woman died despite the medical team’s efforts. 23 people were affected by her mysterious disease, and five even ended up in the hospital themselves. Still to today, doctors are unsure of the cause of her condition and why it affected so many people.

Progeria is one of the most interesting disorders I learned about in my AP biology class. It is a random mutation that causes rapid aging. Children born with this genetic mutation don't live very long because they age so quickly and there are many ill effects suffered by the child. Another interesting disease I learned about was during my internship this summer. The patient ended up in the neurosurgical ICU with west nile, but I am not sure if the diagnosis was confirmed by the CDC or not because my internship ended before the test results came in.

I recently learned about sleep paralysis. This is a condition where your mind wakes up before you mind does and you are paralyzed except for your eyes and breathing. So you are unable to move until the episode is over. It seems super scary and there really isn't much research about it! One way to way to be diagnosed it to go to a place like a sleep clinic.

Some people afflicted, however, may think that they are immortal. Imagine if people were really immortal ! !

Something that I thought was very interesting about CTE (a brain disorder that many football players / boxers die from) is that it doesn't only involve concussions. Instead, any hit to your head. If someone just bopped you in the head, or you stood up from under a table and hit your head, then that actually increases your likeliness of the disease (scary!). It's very unlikely if you didn't have a concussion (or repeated trauma to your head) to develop CTE.

The weirdest disease I have heard of is Kuru, or the laughing disease. It is a rare disease and mostly found in New Guinea. The laughing disease is caused by oddly folded proteins that lead to tremors and lose of coordination. Another symptom is random bursts of laughter. I find it very interesting that a malfunction of a protein can causing laughter, even when one is not in a great mood.

The weirdest disease I have hard of is water allergy, where people can't handle water. There are only 30 cases ever to be known about their inability to drink water, shower for too long or be in the rain is very odd, considering it is very important for daily life.

One of the weirdest diseases I've heard about is the foreign accent syndrome (FAS). Often a result of a stroke or a traumatic brain injury, FAS leaves people with speech disorders. They develop such a change in their speech that a native speaker is perceived to speak with a "foreign" accent.

One of my distant cousins has Congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP) – a genetic disorder in which she can't feel pain. I remember my mom telling me how difficult it is for her parents because even if she gets hurt while playing with blocks, for example, she won't cry out in pain and her parent's won't know she's hurt in time. It may seem that not being able to feel is a good thing, but feeling pain and reacting to getting hurt is extremely important.
