Poor children in Victorian times didn’t have very good clothing at all and sometimes no shoes.
Rich girls :
For example, girls skirts might be shorter than the adult skirt.Little girls skirts would go down to the knees. Then around ten years af age the length would be somewhere around mid-calf. Around the age of 16 a girls skirt would be full length down to the ankles just like their mothers. In fact, by this time the well to do young ladies would be dressing in the same fashion as adults.Until the late 1800’s girls were still wearing corsets.
Rich boys:
By modern standards young Victorian boys dressed like girls. They mainly wore frocks and pleated skirts until the age of three or four. Sometime around the 1860’s the Scottish Highlander look became popular complete with plaid skirt and all. These were worn by boys between four and eight years old. Also at this time Victorian boys started wearing the Knickerbocker suit. A style most likely borrowed from the Americans.

It was dark in the mines making it hard to see and at times would cause permanent problems with sight from the constant strain on the eyes. Often they would start work at 2 am and stay underground for 16 hours or more.
A Victorian Child Chimney Sweep may have been the most dangerous job for children in the 1800’s.The constant breathing in of soot caused irreversible lung damage in many children. There were a few reported cases of children getting stuck in chimneys and no one even knowing it, leaving them to die alone from exposure or smoke inhalation or worse.

The poor were initially introduced to school thanks to the ‘Sunday school’ introduction by Robert Raikes with about 1,250,000 children gaining an education with this method by 1831.

This was all turned on its head however in 1870 with the passing of the law and schools began to cater for the rich and poor alike.
Schools were certainly different to the schools we have of today. Within poor inner city areas there could be anywhere between 70 and 80 pupils in one class!

The schools were imposing buildings with high up windows to prevent children from seeing out of. Furthermore the walls of the schools lacked creativity and were often bare or had merely text for the children to look at.
