Though this was a small town community, these people were definitely upstanders. These were one of the few towns who would take care of refugees and about more than half were Jews. They would do this because they wanted to help and they didn't want to refuse to help them in any way. They would take care of them by providing them with the necessary items. They witnessed one of the horrible events that happened during the Holocaust. Hartheim castle, a home for mentally handicapped children, was being converted into a slaughter house fit with gas chambers and ovens. The people in the surrounding town could tell both by the stench of the smoke, and the human remains littering the vicinity of the castle, what it was being used for. They were prompted with a decision to spread the truth of this facility and possibly put a stop to it, but they did not. A Nazi director threatened that anyone who shared these "rumors" would be put in a concentration camp. He was just following the system, he didnt create the system but he didnt stop it either.
