We used the discussion board to make predictions, connect to our own lives and discuss the character and how they had changed throughout the story. I basically used it in place of a class conference on the matter because my kids did not like participating in conferences. However, they all posted on the discussion board. I think each class is different and the "face to face" call would have been best but my class never got on and those that did would not turn on their mics or cameras. Sooo.... we used discussion boards.

They each completed a slide show with facts about their person and I then posted 6 onto Schoology for the last 4 weeks of school. They had to choose 3 to read and give 1 compliment and ask 2 questions. I also recorded myself reading 4-5 of the CCC mentor books and had students post responses. For vocabulary, they had to choose 2 of the words to use correctly in a sentence. For reading, they posted predictions, questions they had, and what they thought the central message of the story was. My biggest struggle was that most did not put a lot of effort into their posts, there were many spelling and punctuation errors. Some of the answers made no sense, I could tell they hadn't read the question completely.  It drove me crazy at first, but eventually I had to let it go. This year I plan to use Schoology more in the classroom to practice this skill and let them know my expectations for discussion posts.

Even in math, we would pose a challenge problem (or 3) and kids were able to share their thinking.

This helped kids feel connected to each other and it allowed us to check for understanding and answer questions as needed. I had some set up for a read aloud I started, but sadly, they did not get utilized by the students. Each morning the students had a different morning meeting question that they would answer. My team and I did a pretty solid job of coming up with different questions that couldn't be answered with a yes or no and allowed us all to learn all kinds of new things about one another.
