With HIV infection, within the first few weeks, a person will experience flu-like symptoms. Then the disease is usually asymptomatic up until it progresses to AIDS. Symptoms of AIDS are weight loss, fever, night sweats, fatigue, and recurrent infections. When a baby is born to someone who has HIV, that does not mean that they are HIV positive, if the mother and infant have good prenatal and postpartum care. Although, HIV can pass through the placenta and infect the fetus. Infants who are infected with HIV show symptoms within the first 2-3 months, and once they do develop symptoms they can vary. There is no cure for AIDS. Treatment for HIV is called antiretroviral therapy which involves medicine daily.
