Mrs. Morrow

1) ""Would you care for a cocktail?" I asked her. I was feeling in the mood for one myself. "We can go in the club car. All right?" "Dear, are you allowed to order drinks?" she asked me. Not snotty, though. She was too charming and all to be snotty." (31).
2) In the quotation, Mrs. Morrow is pretty adamantly denying the advances that Holden is trying to make onto her. This reveals that she's not really into him in any way, and really just wanted to talk about her son.
3) What this reveals about Holden is how he feels superior to other people in many ways, and despite her clearly not reciprocating the same energy he was, he continues despite that.

1) " He came down off the shower ledge and came in the room. "Hi," he said. He always said it like he was terrifically bored or terrifically tired. He didn't want you to think he was visiting you or anything. He wanted you to think he'd come in by mistake, for God's sake. " (11)
2) Through his actions in this, Holden paints a solid picture of him. He presents his overconfidence and things like that, however, Holden is extremely critical of him. Since he already dislikes him so much, he continues to trash on him for things that are defensible, and could go both ways, just like him saying "Hi".
3) What this says about Holden is how judgmental he is about other people. He proceeds with absolutely no care about how Ackley might be doing, and he judges despite possibly being hypocritical.

1) " After they left, I started getting sorry that I'd only given them ten bucks for their collection. But the thing was, I'd made that date to go to a matinee with old Sally Hayes, and I needed to keep some dough for the tickets and stuff. I was sorry anyway, though. Goddam money. It always ends up making you blue as hell. " (61)
2) The nuns made Holden, a pretty critical person, seriously feel remorse for his actions. This showed how despite being guided by religion, their behavior is still exemplary and those strict guidelines made them better people, so much to the point that Holden starts to feel remorse.
3) While Holden may typically be pretty cold, this shows how he does have empathy. He feels bad for not giving them more money, even though giving them more money would have resulted in him not being able to buy as many tickets.

Jane Gallagher

1) " "Jane Gallagher," I said. I even got up from the washbowl when he said that. I damn near dropped dead. "You're damn right I know her. She practically lived right next door to me, the summer before last. She had this big damn Doberman pinscher. That's how I met her. Her dog used to keep coming over in our--" "You're right in my light, Holden, for Chrissake," Stradlater said. "Ya have to stand right there?" " (17).
2) From this, Jane's immediately set as the "popular neighbor" that Holden drools in comparison to. She's very attractive as is described, and through this, we know that Jane's a popular person that people envy. There must be a reason that Holden holds her above his narcissistic self.
3) We can tell that Holden really likes this person, as other than his relatives, he hasn't really complimented anyone at all. His expression towards her is very bright, and it's shown that he is capable of compassion.

1) " Anyway, first he'd take a swallow and squirt it all over her, then she did it to him--they took turns, for God's sake. You should've seen them... Sometimes I can think of very crumby stuff I wouldn't mind doing if the opportunity came up. I can even see how it might be quite a lot of fun, in a crumby way, and if you were both sort of drunk and all, to get a girl and squirt water or something all over each other's face."( 34)
2) Holden mentions that these people were honestly pretty good looking, but its clear that these people are seen as abnormal and wild.
3) This represents Holden as a hypocrite, because while he talks about how weird it is and how abnormal they are, he talks about how he also sees how it could potentially be fun. He directly contradicts himself in this, and this further puts Holden in a weird position.

1) " Then I tried to get them in a little intelligent conversation, but it was practically impossible. You had to twist their arms. You could hardly tell which was the stupidest of the three of them. And the whole three of them kept looking all around the goddam room, like as if they expected a flock of goddam movie stars to come in any minute. " (40).
2) He describes these girls as completley absent of any sort of behavior, and any sort of intelligence. While they might not be the sharpest, they're also just three girls hanging out that just met Holden, so they might not even be saying too much.
3) This describes Holden as someone who thinks that if they're not showing intelligence through conversation, they're worthless. He treats them basically like objects in this passage, and thinks that he's the one that's controlling through everything.
