Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809. When he was three years old, his parents died and he was adopted by John Allan, a merchant in Richmond, Virginia. From 1815 to 1820 Poe went to a private school in England. Then, in 1826, he went to the University of Virginia. He published his first book of poems in 1827. In 1834 he married his cousin Virginia, who was only thirteen years old. They moved to Richmond.
Poe lived in New York and then Philadelphia, where he continued to publish stories, including 'Ligeia' (1838) and 'The Devil in the Belfry' (1839).
His wife died in 1847. Poe had a nervous breakdown two years later, and died of alcoholism. He has had a great influence on other writers, especially on French poets such as Baudelaire, and British writers like Robert Louis Stevenson.

"Ligeia" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1838. The story is told by an unnamed narrator who describes the qualities of Ligeia: a beautiful, passionate and intellectual woman, raven-haired and dark-eyed. He doesn't remember anything about her, just her unconventional beauty.

They married, and after an unspecified length of time Ligeia became ill and ultimately died. The narrator bought an abbey in England. He soon entered into a loveless marriage with "the fair-haired and blue-eyed Lady Rowena Trevanion, of Tremaine".
During the second month of marriage, Rowena started to suffer from worsening anxiety and fever. One night, when she was about to faint, the narrator poured her a goblet of wine. Drugged with opium, he saw (or thought) drops of "a brilliant and ruby colored fluid" falling into the goblet. Her condition rapidly got worse, and a few days later she died and her body was wrapped for burial.

As the narrator kept vigil overnight, he noticed a brief return of color to Rowena's cheeks. She repeatedly showed signs of reviving, before relapsing into apparent death. As dawn breaks, and the narrator was sitting emotionally exhausted from the night's struggle, the shrouded body revived once more, standed and walked into the middle of the room. When he touched the figure, its head bandages fell away to reveal masses of raven hair and dark eyes: Rowena transformed into Ligeia.

"The Devil in the Belfry" is a satirical short story by Edgar Allan Poe.

In an isolated town called Vondervotteimittiss (wonder-what-time-it-is), the punctilious inhabitants seem to be concerned with nothing but clocks and cabbage. This methodical, boring and quiet little borough is devastated by the arrival of a devilish figure playing a big fiddle who comes straight down from a hill, goes into the belltower, brutally attacks the belfry-man and rings thirteen o'clock, to the horror of the town's inhabitants.

Poe's best known fiction works are Gothic, a genre that he followed to appease the public taste. Many of his works are generally considered part of the dark romanticism genre, a literary reaction to transcendentalism which Poe strongly disliked.
</sup>

Beyond horror, Poe also wrote satires and humor tales. For comic effect, he used irony and ludicrous extravagance, often in an attempt to liberate the reader from cultural conformity.
</sup>

Poe wrote much of his work using themes aimed specifically at mass-market tastes. To that end, his fiction often included elements of popular pseudosciences, such as phrenology and physiognomy.
