India - Bollywood - Influenced

Within Bollywood and Indian film Indian culture is portrayed very authentically. However, there are components of Indian film that have been influenced by modern culture. Euro centric beauty standards have taken a large toll on Indian representation. The United States has remained as a general symbol of beauty standards. The Untied States has manipulated many other cultures and how the beauty standard is. In India caucasian models are dominating the film and media industry. Typically caucasian models with white skin, thing frames, blond hair, and blue eyes are looked at as pretty. The portrayal of this leads Indian’s to believe that they would have to look that way to be “pretty”. The colorism issue in India is fairly large. The idea that Indian’s need to be lighter rather that dark-skinned is a large concept within the mdia industry. “Fairness creams” have been introduced to make dark-skinned individuals appear lighter to suit the caucasian beauty standard. Although there are some actresses in Indian Film who are apposed to this many of the other actresses promote these products and encourage people to use them. Another common issue within media is the size-zero phenomenon. Model’s and actresses started to become increasingly thin in order to fir the “ideal” body shape. Originally, Indian actresses and models have slightly curvacious bodies. This standard causes Indian’s to change their body shape to fit the caucasian beauty standard. Kareena Kapoor, a famous Indian Actress, had lost a large amount of weight in 2008. Soon other actresses started to follow and it became the trend. All this changes the idea and culture behind Indian’s and allows the western media to control how Indian’s are perceived and changes the authenticity behind Indian media.

There are many ways that India tries to preserve their films. India uses film archives to preserve old films. They have started to spread this art of preserving by teaching others how to preserve said films. Many Indian actors have tried to take charge with preserving older films and have acted as activists on this subject. The preserving of films in India is being done but is mostly inoperative. Although, people have tried to save films, many other films have been lost due to insufficient preservation. Nowadays, preserving films is easier, but some of the earliers films have been lost and none of the films have been found.

India’s cuisine is always known as one of the richest cuisines. This is due to the combinations of spices that Indian’s use in everyday cooking. Western cuisine is extremely different from this. They’re often known for their fried foods, with simple tastes. India has always felt inferior to the western countries, which leads them to hold such countries in high regard. This leads them to wanting to make and eat the same foods as the westerners in order to be held in high regard as they do with them. Some other ways how India was influenced is through the fusion of food. The combinations of Indian cuisine with wester cuisine is very common. Some of them being, chicken tikka pasta, or items like butter chicken pizza, are all sold to appeal to the Indian public due to their outlook on wester cuisine.

Food in India is a very important and large component of India’s culture. Food is used for gatherings, traditions, social customs, and even religious rites. Generations of family’s learn from one other recipes, and home made items. This being one of the ways the food culture is preserved through generations. Both recipes and cooking methods travel through generations. Cooking methods like the tandoor are constantly used throughout cooking, this acts as a preservation method by making sure the cooking method is still used for its specified foods. The Indian government also supports initiatives to preserve the delicate Indian culture behind cooking and publicises certain methods and recipes. Ironically, tourism also contributes to the preservation of Indian cuisine. Tourists travel to areas to learn more about the authenticity behind the country and its traditions. Tourists would then be looking for the authentic Indian cuisine to fufill their travel. Global awareness, or globalisation, also contributes to the preservation of Indian cuisine. Preserving and publicising recipes and cooking methods allows for these things to be more known meaning they would be practiced and not forgotten.

Ultimately, using India as a case study, India has been influenced by other countries but have tried preservation techniques. Is globalization causing us to all become the same culture? Yes, the influence of western media on cultural heritage is very strong. Some traditions have been lost while others continue to persist but the amount of loss is larger to the amount that has been preserved. India's culture is extremely rich full of intricate customs and traditons, if India does not work harder to preserve these components wester traditions would overtake them.
