https://padlet.com/gallery/bookreports/wish/376623981

Title: Number the Stars
Author: Lois Lowry

Introduction: Number the Stars is about the bravery of ordinary people who did courageous things in World War 2.

Summary: In Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1943, a young girl must help save her Jewish best friend and her family from the Nazis.

Characters:

Annemarie Johansen - main character, 10-year-old Danish girl

Mrs. Johansen - Annemarie's mother

Peter Nielsen - leader in the Danish resistance

Henrik - Annemarie's aunt

Ellen Rosen - Annemarie's best friend. She is Jewish.

Plot:
Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen are best friends and always walk to school together. When the Nazis start shutting Jewish businesses down and officers question the girls as they walk to school, the Rosen family realizes they must flee. The Johansens help them escape through a clever plan to hide them in a coffin and put them in Henrik's boat that he sails to Sweden. Along the way, Annemarie learns about the courage of the resistance fighters and the sacrifices her family has made.

Evaluation and conclusion
This is partly a historical fiction book because it contains elements of the true story of the war in Denmark, even though the characters did not actually exist. I would highly recommend this book because it puts you in the shoes of people who lived through the terror of the Nazis. It is also a story about the power of friendship, and anyone who has had a best friend can relate to the love between Ellen and Annemarie.

Ego Is the Enemy is a personal development book that helps us to realize better that wherever we are, whatever we're doing, our worst enemy already lives inside us: our ego.

These below are some quotes from the book that will give us a bigger picture of what it's about:

-The ego we see most commonly goes by a more casual definition: an unhealthy belief in our own importance. Arrogance.

-Just one thing keeps ego around—comfort.

- The mixed martial arts pioneer and multi-title champion Frank Shamrock has a system he trains fighters in that he calls plus, minus, and equal. Each fighter, to become great, he said, needs to have someone better that they can learn from, someone lesser who they can teach, and someone equal that they can challenge themselves against.

- It’s worth saying: just because you are quiet doesn’t mean that you are without pride. Privately thinking you’re better than others is still pride. It’s still dangerous.

- It’s not about beating the other guy. It’s not about having more than the others. It’s about being what you are, and being as good as possible at it, without succumbing to all the things that draw you away from it. It’s about going where you set out to go. About accomplishing the most that you’re capable of in what you choose. That’s it. No more and no less.

- Be an anteambulo. Clear the path for the people above you and you will eventually create a path for yourself.

- When you are just starting out, we can be sure of a few fundamental realities: 1) You’re not nearly as good or as important as you think you are; 2) You have an attitude that needs to be readjustedWhen you are just starting out, we can be sure of a few fundamental realities: 1) You’re not nearly as good or as important as you think you are; 2) You have an attitude that needs to be readjusted.

- When student is ready, the teacher appears.

- You can’t learn if you think you already know. You will not find the answers if you’re too conceited and self-assured to ask the questions. You cannot get better if you’re convinced you are the best.

- The art of taking feedback is such a crucial skill in life, particularly harsh and critical feedback. We not only need to take this harsh feedback, but actively solicit it, labor to seek out the negative precisely when our friends and family and brain are telling us that we’re doing great.
