Hook: Imagine working in a field with the sun blazing, barely able to see because of it. Pausing to wipe sweat off is not an option because the overseer stands not to far away ready to whip anyone who pauses for even a moment. This is the way slaves had to live; they were always looking over their shoulder.
Background information: The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass is about a slave named Frederick and he lets others know how hard being a slave really is, and that not many people really see the depths of slavery.
Thesis statement: Along with the use of figurative language Douglass uses his experiences to reveal the effects of slavery on slaves and slave owners, which supports his position to end slavery.

Topic sentence: Frederick Douglass uses figurative language and his experiences as a slave to let people know how terrible slavery really was and that it should be completely abolished. His positions were that slavery is terrible for slaves and slavery corrupts slave owners. Frederick Douglass wanted to reveal and let the other people understand how dangerous it can be to be a slave. His goal was to get people to agree and support him when saying that slavery should be completely abolished. Today in 2019 there is no slavery. If Frederick Douglass did not affect so many people there might still be slavery today. Frederick Douglass changed many people in what they think about slavery.

Topic Sentence: One of Frederick´s positions is that slavery is terrible for slaves. Slavery has changed him and his relationships and who he became as a person.
Quote 3: Frederick writes in excerpt four paragraph two, " I lived with Mr. Covey for one year. During the first six months, of that year, scarce a week passed without his whipping me. I was seldom free from a sore back. My awkwardness was almost always his excuse for whipping me."
Quote 4: In excerpt two paragraph three Frederick writes, " ...very many of their sleeping hours are consumed in preparing for the field the coming day; and when this is done; old and young, male and female, married and single, drop down side by side on one common bed- the cold, damp, floor, each covering himself, or herself, with their miserable blankets.¨

Topic Sentence: Another one of Frederick Douglass´s positions is that slavery corrupts slave owners. He says that the power that comes with slavery changes a person in ways that are not always good.
Quote 5: In excerpt three paragraph six Frederick writes, " Slavery soon proved its ability to divest her of these heavenly qualities. Under its influence, the tender heart became stone, and the lamblike disposition gave away to one of tiger-like fierceness."

Quote 6: Frederick Douglass writes in excerpt three paragraph three, " But, alas! this kind heart had but short time to remain such. The fatal poison of irresponsible power was already in her hands, and soon commenced its infernal work. That cheerful eye, under the influence of slavery, soon became red with rage; that voice, made all of sweet accord, changed to one of harsh discord; and that angelic face gave place to that of a demon."
